Your Role
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Commercial Lines, the Underwriting Manager (UM) leads the development of business volume in the province of Ontario. Responsible for the underwriting team and broker relations, he or she is tasked with profitably growing the business. The UM is responsible for the technical knowledge and expertise of the sales teams in underwriting, including identifying current and future training needs, organizing training, and establishing mentoring programs. The UM oversees the delegation of underwriting authority and referrals. The UM must ensure, through internal audits, compliance with authorization letters and underwriting standards. He or she must attend industry events, maintain a visible presence among our partner brokers, and have a network of contacts capable of solidifying future growth.
What You Bring to This Role
- At least 10 years of underwriting experience (commercial and personal)
- Leadership skills and experience managing a team
- Ability to motivate a team and provide guidance
- Robust oral and written communication skills
- Excellent negotiation, analytical, and investigative skills
- Strong time management, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and manage changing priorities
- In-depth knowledge of property and commercial liability underwriting.
- General knowledge of all insurance products: Liability, E&O;, D&O;, and Auto.

- Provide guidance and mentorship to the team
- Provide timely reports & case presentations to the VP of Commercial Lines
- Conduct underwriting risk analyses
- Conduct quarterly audits of internally underwritten files and those of our wholesalers (MGAs)
- Lead projects and ad hoc tasks
