Opportunity Overview:
A well-established general contractor operating throughout Southern Ontario is seeking an experienced Financial Controller to provide strategic and operational financial leadership.
This individual will oversee the organization’s accounting and finance functions while remaining actively involved in financial reporting, forecasting, cash-flow management, project financial oversight, and performance analysis. The successful candidate will work closely with ownership, senior leadership, project managers, and operational teams to strengthen financial visibility, accountability, and long-term business performance.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Financial Strategy:
- Develop and implement financial strategies that align with the company's goals
and objectives.
- Provide strategic financial advice to the executive team to supportdecision-making.
- Develop and maintain meaningful financial performance metrics, key performance
indicators (KPIs), and executive reporting tools that provide visibility into profitability,
operational performance, cash flow, and long-term financial health.
- Translate financial and operational data into actionable insights and recommendations
that support growth, profitability, and risk mitigation.
2. Construction Industry Expertise:
- Utilize in-depth knowledge of the construction industry to guide financial decisions
and ensure compliance with industry-specific regulations.
- Manage Work in Progress (WIP) accounting andreporting.
- Monitor and analyze project performance, including contribution margin, budget versus
actual costs, forecasted costs to complete, and overall project profitability
- Partner with project managers and operational leaders to identify risks, opportunities,
and corrective actions that improve project financial outcomes.
3. Accounting and Reporting:
- Provide leadership to a finance function, while maintaining active involvement
in day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, forecasting, cash
management, and project financial oversight.
- Oversee all aspects of financial accounting, ensuring accurate and timely
financial reporting.
- Prepare, analyze, and present monthly project cost and cashflow reports, financial
statements, balance sheets, budget updates, and profitability analyses.
- Develop and maintain management reporting and executive dashboards that provide
visibility into project performance, business unit results, overhead recovery, cash
position, and key financial trends.
- Lead the development and continuous enhancement of executive reporting, including a
comprehensive financial health dashboard that provides visibility into project
profitability, manager performance, estimating effectiveness, overhead recovery, cash
flow, and other key business performance indicators.
- Provide regular financial reporting, analysis, and insights to the leadership team,
including analysis of financial performance against budget, forecast, and strategic
objectives. the Company’s
- Provide a biweekly summary of the company’s financial position to the leadership team.
4. Cash Flow Management:
- Monitor and manage cash flow to ensure adequate funds are available for
ongoing operations and strategic initiatives.
- Implement effective cash flow forecasting and reporting mechanisms.
- Develop and maintain short- and long-term cash flow forecasts and liquidity reporting
tools.
- Monitor current and projected cash positions, including anticipated obligations, working
capital requirements, and potential cash flow constraints.
- Identify and communicate emerging cash flow risks and recommend mitigation
strategies to support the company’s financial stability and growth.
5. Tax Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all tax regulations, filing deadlines, and reporting requirements.
- Work closely with external tax advisors to optimize the company's tax position.
6. Financial Controls:
- Establish and maintain robust financial controls to safeguard company’s assets and
ensure financial accuracy.
- Ensure integrity, consistency, and reliability of financial and operational data used for
management reporting and decision making.
- Implement best practices for financial risk management, performance monitoring, and
financial governance.
Key Dashboard & Performance Metrics
The Financial Controller will be responsible for designing and maintaining a financial health
dashboard that may include, but is not limited to:
1. Project Performance
- Contribution margin/gross profit by project
- Division 1 costs: budget vs. actual vs. projected to complete
- Division 2-33 costs: budget vs. actual vs. projected to complete
2. Project Manager Performance
- Monthly contribution by manager
- Trailing 12-month contribution and trend analysis
3. Corporate Overhead
- Monthly budget vs actual
- Year-to-date budget versus actual
4. Overhead coverage
- Contribution generated vs overhead requirements
- Monthly over/under performance
- Year-to-date over/under performance
5. Estimating performance
- Number of bids submitted vs awarded
- Value of bids submitted vs awarded
- Awarded project profitability and cost analysis
6. Cash Flow and Liquidity
- Current cash position
- Adjusted free cash position
- Working capital and job borrow analysis
- Projected cash requirements and potential cash flow constraints
Education & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting,
or a related field.
- Professional accounting designation (CPA or similar), strongly preferred.
- Additional education or training in financial management, business analytics, or
construction management is considered an asset.
Knowledge & Experience:
- Progressive accounting and finance experience, typically acquired through 8-10 years of
increasing responsibility, including leadership of a full-cycle accounting function within a
construction or project-based environment.
- Strong understanding of construction accounting, including Work in Progress (WIP) reporting,
percentage-of-completion accounting, project costing, and revenue recognition
- Experience managing cash flow, working capital, financial forecasting, budgeting, and corporate
financial reporting
- Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles.
- Demonstrated experience translating financial information into business insights
that support organizational and strategic decision-making.
- Proven experience providing financial leadership and contributing to the overall
business strategy in a growth-oriented organization.
- Experience working closely with senior leadership, project managers, operational
leaders, and external advisors.
- Trainer-level experience in SAGE 100 and Procore, including reporting, administration,
and best-practice utilization.
- Robust capabilities in Power BI, including dashboard development, data visualization,
trend analysis, and performance reporting.
