We are in search of a Legal Assistant with extensive experience in litigation and familiarity with BC and ON jurisdiction court rules and processes to join us as a full-time member of our support services team.
Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Legal Assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate will provide administrative support to multiple lawyers on our legal team and contribute to the efficient operation of the law office.
This position provides an opportunity for career progression that leverages your extensive litigation experience, from multiple jurisdictions across Canada, to a focused area of specialization and provides support for our team of lawyers working on litigation files in Ontario and British Columbia.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and organize calendars, emails, correspondence, notes, court schedules, meetings, resources, files and bring it forward systems.
- Prepare documents including (formatting, editing, proofing) correspondence, memos, agreements, reports, pleadings, and other court documents.
- Proofread legal documents for accuracy and completeness
- Handle data entry tasks accurately and efficiently
- Follow procedures surrounding the filing and serving of court pleadings and documents in BC and ON.
- Coordinate with court registries to arrange for hearings, submissions, and trials.
- Extensively use litigation software,
databases, and document management systems to search and manage complex litigation matters.
Qualifications
This ideal candidate for this position meets the following requirements:
- Post secondary (BA, diploma, or certificate) for paralegal, legal assistant, law, justice studies, Indigenous studies, preferred.
- 2+ years of work experience as a Legal Assistant with increased levels of responsibility in litigation as a focused area of specialization.
- With mentorship and training a career path for a Senior Legal Assistant designation may follow within a year of established familiarity for our areas of practice.
Key Competencies:
1. Strong problem-solving skills and resourcefulness.
2. Knowledge of legal practices, terminology, Court Rules, and processes.
3. High level of initiative, (knowing when to seek appropriate advice).
4. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
6. Technical competencies:
- Advanced use and knowledge of MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with BC Online, LTSA searches, litigation software and document management systems.
7. Reliability, flexibility, and dependability are essential for this position.
8. Experience working with Indigenous nations, communities, considered an asset.
9. Experience in a legal support role preferred
10. Proficiency in legal terminology and processes
11. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to prioritize workload
