TOK Smartech keeps public transit and commercial fleets safe and running. Our Fire, Safety & IT Solutions division services the onboard fire suppression, safety, security, and IT systems that transit agencies across Southern Ontario rely on every day.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Operations Manager or a Senior Field Technician, the Junior Field Service Technician supports senior staff with the installation, maintenance, and repair of safety, security, and IT systems on transit and fleet vehicles. This role has a strong focus on onboard fire suppression system servicing and repair, with growing exposure to collision avoidance systems. The goal is to repair and turn vehicles around quickly and efficiently, minimizing impact to service for our customers.

No fire suppression background? If you're mechanically inclined and eager to learn, we train and certify you in-house.

Key Responsibilities

Fire Suppression & Fire Extinguisher Systems (Primary Focus)

- Service, maintain, and repair onboard Fogmaker and Amerex fire suppression systems on transit vehicles
- Teardown and rebuild Fogmaker piston accumulators/cylinders
- Service, maintain, and inspect fire extinguishers – primarily Amerex, plus other brands in use

Collision Avoidance Systems (Growing Priority)

- Assist with installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of Collision Avoidance Systems (Rosco Mobileye Shield Plus), working alongside the department's senior technician to build proficiency as this system grows in importance

Other Onboard Systems (General Assist)

- CAD/AVL systems – Init, Consat




- Automatic Passenger Counters (APC) – IRIS, Infodev
- Onboard CCTV systems – Seon, Streamax
- GPS and Mobile Wi-Fi units – Teltonika, Cradlepoint

General

- Perform other duties and emergency service work outside normal business hours, as required

Qualifications

Required

- Valid Ontario Class "G" driver's license with a clean driving abstract, and access to a reliable personal vehicle if a company vehicle is temporarily unavailable
- High School Diploma
- Post-secondary education in a related technical field is strongly preferred – electronics, electromechanical, automotive/heavy-duty, fire protection, or similar (college, university, or apprenticeship)
- Hands-on and technically inclined, with solid mechanical aptitude – comfortable with precise teardown and rebuild work on pressurized components such as cylinders and accumulators
- Comfortable using hand and power tools, and a multimeter for basic electrical troubleshooting
- Solid understanding of Windows 11, basic networking, and general computer systems
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and documentation skills
- Willingness to learn new systems and grow with the technology
- Comfortable dealing directly with customers and vendors, in person or by email
- Works well independently or on a team; organized,



with the ability to prioritize a changing workload
- Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends

Assets

- Previous experience servicing transit, fleet, or heavy vehicles
- Existing fire suppression, fire extinguisher, or high-pressure cylinder certification – full training and certification is provided in-house, so this is not required to apply

Physical Requirements

- Regular lifting and handling of fire extinguishers, cylinders, and service equipment
- Working in, under, and around transit vehicles, including confined spaces
- Work is primarily performed indoors in transit garages and our shop, with occasional outdoor work

Schedule

- Standard 8-hour shift; most of the team works regular daytime hours
- Flexibility for evenings and weekends is required, since most transit vehicles are in service during the day and are best serviced around their availability
- Occasional after-hours and emergency work as needed

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $22.00-$26.00 per hour
