Title: AI Engineer
Location: Montreal, QC
Company: Prophet (Valstone Portfolio)
About Prophet
Prophet builds the ERP platform purpose-built for fresh produce and floral supply chains — real-time inventory, pallet tracking, and full traceability for growers, packhouses, and distributors managing perishable inventory at scale. Acquired by Valstone in November 2023, Prophet is the largest fresh produce software supplier in Europe, and the largest business in the Valstone portfolio.
Prophet's core engineering team is based in Birmingham, UK, with offices also in North America (Los Angeles) and South Africa. The core team is experienced and their skillset remains central to the product, but it skews toward an older technology generation that hasn't fully kept pace with what's now possible with AI-assisted development. This role is part of a deliberate move to build new, AI-fluent engineering capability in Montreal — closer to where that talent and skillset is more readily available.
About the Role
Prophet's platform runs on C#, but the real opportunity here isn't language depth — it's build speed and versatility. Prophet has already shown what's possible: an AI-agent-powered ordering platform was built that lets customers order fresh produce conversationally, and a full depot delivery-scheduling app was built in about a week — work that would typically take six months to a year. There are 10-15 similar app opportunities queued up, each one currently capturing revenue that leaks to third-party point solutions instead of staying inside Prophet's own platform.
This role is Prophet's next step toward doing more of that: someone comfortable in C# but not limited to it, fluent with AI-assisted development tools,
and able to pick up whatever language or framework a given app actually calls for. It's a build-first, technical leadership track, not a research or management role — you'll own architecture and engineering decisions on what you build and grow your influence through output, not headcount.
You should care about the business case behind a feature as much as the code: what it costs to run, how fast it ships, and whether it's worth building in-house versus letting a third party keep that revenue.
What You'll Do
- Design and ship small, fast, AI-assisted applications that extend Prophet's core ERP platform — in the model of the AI ordering agent and the depot-scheduling app already built internally.
- Build customer- and operations-facing tools across the produce and floral supply chain: order and communication tools for growers, packhouses and distributors; traceability, labelling and lot-tracking utilities; depot and logistics scheduling; quality-control and inspection capture in the field; and reporting or alerting tools that surface what's happening across a customer's inventory in real time.
- Work primarily in C#, while staying willing and able to reach for whatever language or framework best fits a given app, rather than forcing one stack onto everything.
- Use AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Cursor, or similar)
as a core part of your daily workflow to compress build timelines from months to days or weeks.
- Work through Prophet's queue of app opportunities, prioritizing the ones that most directly capture revenue currently going to third-party tools.
- Take a feature from idea to shipped product largely independently — scoping it, building it, and getting it in front of customers — working closely with a small, senior engineering counterpart rather than a large surrounding team.
What We're Looking For
Must have
- Hands-on production software engineering experience — judged more by what you've shipped and how fast than by years or title.
- Working knowledge of C#, and genuine comfort picking up new languages or frameworks as the problem demands.
- AI-assisted development tools as a real, daily part of how you build — not an occasional experiment.
- A track record of building something end-to-end, independently, faster than the "normal" estimate for it.
- Comfortable working with minimal day-to-day oversight, reporting into a single technical counterpart rather than a larger team structure.
The kind of person who thrives here
- Build-first and output-driven — you'd rather ship something real than polish a plan for it.
- Commercially curious — you think about what a feature is worth to the business, not just how elegant the code is.
- Comfortable working independently, close to a small senior counterpart, without a large surrounding team.
Practical Details
- Location: Montreal, QC
- Stack: C# primary, with flexibility to use other languages/frameworks as needed
- Position type: Full time
- Reports to: Senior engineering counterpart
- Authorised to work in Canada
