Software Engineer/ Backend Developer

Toronto, ON | Full-Time | 1–5 Years Experience

We’re partnering with a fast-growing private investment firm in Toronto to hire a Software Engineer/ Backend Developer for its Technology & Data team.

This is a hands-on backend-focused engineering role working directly with investment and operating teams to build technology used across the business. The work spans AI-native applications, financial data, APIs, microservices, portfolio analytics and data pipelines.

You’ll take problems from idea through production, with significant ownership and exposure to both the technology and the business.

What You’ll Do

- Build backend applications and services primarily in Python
- Design and develop APIs, microservices and data pipelines
- Build AI-enabled applications using financial data and documents
- Develop tools that support portfolio analysis and investment decision-making
- Integrate data across internal and external systems
- Work directly with business stakeholders to understand problems and design solutions
- Own projects from concept through production
- Contribute across the stack when needed

Ideal candidates will have





- Strong ownership and a demonstrated ability to deliver in a fast-paced workplace
- Strong Python development experience
- Experience building backend services, APIs and microservices
- Experience shipping and supporting production software
- Strong software engineering fundamentals across design, testing, debugging and maintainability
- Previous experience at a strong, reputable technology company is highly valued
- Strong academic training; a top Canadian university background is preferred
- Ability to work independently through ambiguous problems
- Strong communication and collaboration skills

Strong Assets

- Full-stack experience with technologies such as React, JavaScript or TypeScript
- Hands-on experience with AI development tools
- Experience building with LLMs, AI agents, retrieval systems or AI workflows
- FastAPI, Flask, Django or Next.js
- Cloud, data engineering or production infrastructure experience
- Interest in financial markets, investing or other data-intensive industries

The priority is a smart, high-ownership engineer who can build dependable backend software, move quickly and wants significant responsibility early in their career.
