Location: 3701 Danforth Avenue, Scarborough, ON M1N 2G2. This is a fully in office position.
Rate: $18.00 per hour

Reports to: Coordinator, Café & Director, Facility & Programs

Variety - the Children’s Charity (Ontario) supports programming for children with a disability at Variety Village and throughout the province. Variety programming is inclusive and powered by sport, transforming the lives of individuals and families, while creating more inclusive communities across Ontario. Variety -the Children’s Charity (Ontario) is funded through individual donors, corporate sponsorship, fundraising activities, federal and provincial governments, and foundations.
Variety - the Children's Charity (Ontario) is part of an international charity that has been in operation since 1928. The charity began in Pittsburgh and spread throughout the United States. The chapter in Ontario was the first chapter outside the United States and is now one of the 5 Variety Chapters in Canada.
It was founded in 1945, and the original mission of the charity was to build a school for boys with a disability who could not receive an education in the mainstream school system. The school was called Variety Village.
Variety Village operated as a school until it became a centre of para-sport excellence.
Since the 1970s, Variety athletes and coaches have represented Canada at every summer Paralympic games. Currently, Variety Village is a 170,000 square foot facility and operates as a fitness centre for the general community as well as offering programs, training and camps for children of all ages and abilities.

The Opportunity:
The Café Attendant is responsible for delivering excellent customer service, preparing and serving food and beverages, maintaining cleanliness and organization within the café, and supporting the daily operations to ensure a positive guest experience.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Greet customers in a friendly and professional manner.
- Responsible for selling a variety of prepared food and hot and cold beverages.
- Responsible for set-up of daily prep, which includes preparing coffee and other hot beverages.
- Monitoring food trends and tracking the popularity of various menu items and making recommendations for potential changes to meet customer requests and preferences.
- Cleaning counters, fridge, equipment and kitchen utensils daily before closing.
- Operate point-of-sale (POS) system, handle payments, including taking cash payments and provide receipts.
- Perform opening and closing duties as assigned, including cleaning and securing the café.
- Assisting members with disabilities with purchases, as necessary.
- Collaborate with team members and communicate effectively with management to ensure smooth daily operations.
- Address customer concerns or complaints promptly and professional.
- Participating in in-house training sessions, including but not limited to Plan to Protect & Customer Service.
- Conducting job duties in adherence to all Variety policies and procedures.
- Following health and safety requirements under the Food Handling legislation to ensure the kiosk and the food and beverages served are maintained in a clean and safe manner at all times.
- Other related duties as required
- Support cleanliness standards by working alongside the third-party janitorial service
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Food Handling Certificate or willing to obtain the certificate within 3 months.
- Previous experience in the food service industry an asset.
- Basic math skills and POS System knowledge are preferred.
- Strong customer service & communications skills.
- Ability to multi-task and remain calm under pressure.
- Well-organized, dependable, and punctual.
- Works well independently and as part of a team.
- Able to work effectively with minimal supervision post-training
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends starting in the fall.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended period during the shift.
- Able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs as part of regular duties.
- Attending In-service training when required.
