ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Supervisor, Child and Family Health, and under the guidance and direction of the Registered Dental Hygienist and/or Dentist, this position is responsible for providing dental assistant services in the Seniors Dental Care Program as outlined in the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Mandatory Health Programs and Services Guidelines, under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

- Acts as a chair side assistant to the Registered Dental Hygienist and/or Dentists in Public Health dental clinics.

- Prepares patients for treatment, sterilizes, sharpens and arranges instruments, prepares materials and ensures the operating field is clear during procedures.

- Maintains clinical and sterilization areas, reports any deficiencies, and monitors the efficacy of sterilization processes.

- Maintains all dental equipment, including portable dental equipment, and inventory of clinical and program supplies.





- Provides oral hygiene instruction and dental health education in the Region’s childcare centres, Public Health dental clinics, schools and other community groups.

- Assists the Registered Dental Hygienist and/or Dentist with the provision of clinical preventive and dental treatment services (e.g., restorations, extractions).

- Complies with prevention and infection control guidelines, in accordance with the Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee (PIDAC), the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) and the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CHDO).

- Assists in the coordination of program activities, including booking dental appointments, mailing general correspondence and notices, and maintaining accurate records.

- Orders supplies and facilitates maintenance of clinical equipment.

- Performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with Branch and Department objectives.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

- Successful completion of a Community College Dental Assisting Diploma or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Successful completion of the National Dentist Assisting Examination Board (NDAEB) exam and current certification by the Ontario Dental Assistants’ Association (ODAA).

- Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.

- Minimum three (3) years dental experience including presenting oral health education.

- Experience with current dental laboratory and clinical procedures.

- Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s licence free of serious offences under the Highway Traffic Act and reliable vehicle to use on corporate business.
