Labrador Marine is looking for a Chief Engineer who holds a Second Class Certifcation to join our Fleet.
Position Summary
The Chief Engineer is responsibleto the Master for the overall supervision, administration, and efficient operation of all vessel machinery and engineering systems. This includes fault diagnosis, maintenance oversight, regulatory compliance, and personnel management within the Engineering Department.
Key Responsibilities:Operational Oversight
- Supervise all engine room operations and machinery, including fault diagnosis and coordination with the Technical Department for repairs.
- Ensure proper operation of deck machinery (e.g., winches, windlasses, cargo equipment) in collaboration with the Chief Officer.
- Personally oversee hazardous or complex tasks and delegate responsibilities to qualified crew as appropriate.
Maintenance & Compliance
- Maintain and update engineering records, manuals, and logbooks.
- Ensure compliance with Oil Record Book requirements, pollution regulations, and local port standards.
- Adhere to government, classification society, and IMO regulations.
- Monitor and prepare for surveys and inspections in coordination with the Engineering Superintendent.
Procedures & Documentation
- Issue standing orders and develop vessel-specific procedures for:
- Starting/stopping engines, generators, boilers, and other machinery.
- System changeovers and load distribution.
- Watchkeeping routines and communication protocols.
- Operational checklists for confined waters, cargo operations, etc.
- Maintain a list of vessel-specific critical equipment.
Personnel Management & Training
- Train and supervise junior engineers and unlicensed personnel in engineering duties and safety practices.
- Delegate electrical responsibilities when no Electrical Officer is present.
- Submit annual meggar readings for main and auxiliary machinery.
Routine Duties:Daily
- Review and sign Engine Room logbook and UMS checklist.
- Inspect machinery spaces, stores, and workshops.
- Leave night orders for Watchkeeping Engineers.
- Monitor hours of rest for engine room crew.
- Update Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
Weekly
- Submit Weekly Engine Department Report (especially during refit season).
Qualifications & Skills:- Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency (STCW III/2 or equivalent).
- Extensive experience in marine engineering operations and maintenance.
- Robust leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- In-depth knowledge of maritime regulations and safety standards.
- Proficiency in planned maintenance systems and technical documentation
