The CNC Programmer / Operator / Machinist is responsible for programming, setting up, operating, and troubleshooting CNC machining equipment used to produce precision-machined components. The position works from engineering drawings, specifications, CAD/CAM data and production requirements to ensure parts meet dimensional, quality and production standards.

The ideal candidate will have strong machining and CNC programming skills, mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

- Program, set up and operate CNC mills, lathes and other CNC machining equipment.
- Develop, test and optimize CNC programs for new and existing cast components.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T; and machining specifications.
- Determine appropriate tooling, work-holding, cutting tools, speeds, feeds and machining processes.
- Set machine offsets, tool lengths, work coordinates and cutting parameters.
- Perform machine setups, including fixtures, tooling, work-holding and first-piece production.
- Prove out new CNC programs and adjust to ensure secure and accurate operation.
- Modify existing programs to accommodate casting variations, engineering changes, tooling changes and production improvements.
- Troubleshoot machine problems including dimensional variation, tool wear, chatter, surface finish and machine/program issues.
- Perform in-process and final inspection using calipers, micrometers, gauges, indicators, bore gauges and other precision measuring equipment.
- Verify first-off parts and ensure production remains within specified tolerances.
- Identify quality issues and make appropriate machine/program adjustments.
- Deburr, clean and finish machined components as required.
- Maintain accurate production, inspection and quality records.




- Work closely with Quality, Engineering, Maintenance and Production to resolve manufacturing issues.
- Assist with initiatives focused on productivity, scrap reduction, cycle-time improvements and machining efficiency.
- Perform routine machine maintenance and tooling changes.

CNC Programming Responsibilities

- Create CNC programs from engineering drawings and models.
- Utilize CAD/CAM software to generate and optimize tool paths.
- Edit G-code and machine-control programs as required.
- Select appropriate machining strategies based on material, casting geometry, tolerances and production volume.
- Optimize programs for cycle time, tool life, quality and repeatability.
- Transfer and maintain CNC programs for multiple machines.
- Document program revisions and maintain appropriate program-control procedures.

Quality & Inspection

- Conduct first-piece, in-process and final inspections.
- Use precision measurement equipment including:
- Calipers
- Micrometers
- Height gauges
- Dial indicators
- Bore gauges
- Pin gauges
- Thread gauges
- Other specialized inspection equipment

- Interpret dimensional requirements and tolerances.
- Identify and report non-conforming material.
- Work with the Quality Department to investigate root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Support SPC and other quality-control activities where required.

Education

Post Secondary Education

Qualifications

Experience Required

- Completion of a CNC Machining, General Machinist or equivalent technical program
- CNC machining experience in a manufacturing environment.




- Strong CNC programming and machine setup experience.
- Experience with CNC mills and/or lathes.
- Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Knowledge of GD&T;, machining tolerances, cutting tools, speeds and feeds.
- Experience with CAD/CAM programming is an asset.
- Experience with CNC controls such as Fanuc, Haas or similar is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of precision measurement and inspection techniques.
- Experience machining aluminum, zinc or other cast components
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.

Physical/Work Environment

Ability To

- Work in an environment with exposure to noise, metalworking equipment and industrial conditions
- Stand for extended periods
- Lift and handle tooling, fixtures and components
- Be comfortable working around CNC machinery and other industrial equipment
- Must comply with Utilize required PPE and workplace safety procedures.
