We are seeking an experienced, hands-on CNC operator or machinist for a short-term, paid consultation at our Toronto/GTA workshop. We need an active practitioner—not just a theoretical instructor—to teach our team how to correctly and safely use our OpenBuilds CNC router for precision metalwork. This is a temporary, hourly or day-rate gig aimed at helping us bypass the trial-and-error phase of learning our machine.
Responsibilities
- Machine Assessment: Inspect our current OpenBuilds CNC setup, verify calibration, and provide a realistic assessment of what we can reliably manufacture.
- Practical Training: Teach our team the proper setup, operation, and workflow for precision engraving and light cutting.
- Software Workflow: Guide us through file preparation and execution using Easel, standard G-code, and OpenBuilds CONTROL.
- Tooling & Parameters: Establish correct feeds, speeds, depth-of-cut adjustments, and end-mill selection specifically for non-ferrous metals.
- Live Testing:
Run physical test cuts and engravings on brass (latón) and aluminum alongside our team to demonstrate proper technique.
Requirements
- Proven, active experience operating and troubleshooting CNC routers (OpenBuilds, Shapeoko, Avid, or similar prosumer gantry systems).
- Deep practical knowledge of tooling and machining parameters for aluminum and brass.
- Proficiency in Easel, G-code generation, and OpenBuilds CONTROL software.
- Must be based in the Toronto/GTA area and available to physically visit our workshop for a few hours.
- Transparent communication skills with the ability to teach practical concepts to beginners.
To Apply Please reply with a brief overview of your active CNC experience, your location within the GTA, and your expected hourly or per-visit rate. Pay: $21.42-$80.00 per hour
