About Metals 'R' Us
Metals 'R' Us has been a cut-to-size metal supplier based in Nova Scotia since 1997. Today we're the dominant cut-to-size metal supplier in the province.
In 2024 we launched metalsrus.ca. Pick a material, shape, and alloy, tell us the length in inches, and we cut it and ship it anywhere in Canada. It's been a real success, and orders now come in from across the country.
We’ve seen significant growth in the online business and are looking to continue scaling the channel with additional sales staff. This role is the one dedicated to the online store. You'll look after web customers, get their orders through the shop, and have ownership over the B2B digital accounts business which is launching in Q4 of this year.
You’ll work closely with the Sales Manager for education on metals - you’ll also work very closely with an external growth consultant which will give you exposure across eCommerce and AI automation channels.
The role
This is a junior sales, service, and business development job. You'll be the person behind the online store during the day. You answer customers, walk web orders out to the shop to liaise their fabrication, and look after the business accounts that buy through our trade platform.
You don't need to know metal yet. We'll teach you. You do need to be quick on a computer, write clearly, and enjoy helping people. Most of your day happens interacting with customers over phone, email, Shopify, and our custom automation tooling, with a few trips to the shop floor.
This role could be open to an experienced sales person, recent grad, or technical savvy individual in a trade. Pay and seniority of the role will depend on the person we hire. This is for someone with the aforementioned skills that are interested in skirting the world of automation, eCommerce, and growth marketing.
What you'll do
- Talk to online customers. Email, chat, quote requests,
order questions, and the occasional phone call. Clear, tactful, and quick. For a customer in Calgary who'll never see the shop, you’re the “face” of the Metals 'R' Us brand.
- Get web orders to the floor. Print and hand off orders through the day so they're picked, cut, and packed on time. Work with our logistics partners on lost and damaged orders. Tell the customer before they have to ask.
- Learn metal. Shapes, grades, tempers, and what to recommend for a project. You'll learn at the counter and on the floor, from people who've done this for decades. In a year you should be able to tell a customer why 316 stainless beats 304 near salt water, without checking.
- Look after trade accounts. Our trade platform is built: account pricing, a trade portal, cut lists, and terms by application. What it needs is a person. You'll set up new business accounts, be their contact, quote their lists, and keep them ordering. These are our highest-value customers, and you’ll be responsible for building this new channel.
- Review the AI's work. A lot of our quoting and order prep is drafted by AI agents we've built for the store. You check what they produce before it reaches a customer, fix what's off, and flag the patterns you see.
What we're looking for
- You write well. Friendly, clear, and short, in email and chat. You can tell someone their order is delayed and keep them as a customer.
- You're good with a computer. You live in a browser, pick up new software in a day, and keep your inbox under control.
Nobody has to show you twice. You are INTUITIVE.
- You put the customer first. You'd rather solve the problem than close the ticket.
- You're organized. Orders, messages, and quotes arrive all day. Nothing gets dropped.
- You're fine on a shop floor. Steel-toe boots, some noise, and a few walks to the saws a day. You won't be cutting metal, but you'll be around it.
- You want to get positive at something real. Metal is a trade product with a lot to learn. That should sound like a plus.
Nice to have
- Sales experience in a professional setting: retail, inside sales, or account management.
- You've worked in Shopify, on the admin side or as a store owner.
- You use AI tools and understand how they work. You've used ChatGPT or Claude for real work, and you get the idea of an automated workflow. You won't be building them, but you'll work alongside them every day.
- Time around metal or the building trades: welding, fabrication, construction, a machine shop, a building-supply counter, or a family business that used any of them.
- An interest in growth marketing and business development. You see a customer who's ordered twice and wonder how to make it monthly.
- You can read and write French. We serve Quebec in French.
Where this can go
This isn't a dedicated marketing role. It's sales, service, and business development. But you'll be inside the eCommerce side of the business every day: the store, the ads, the email program, the AI tooling, the numbers. A year of doing this well teaches in this role will teach you more about running an online store than most jobs with eCommerce in the title.
Where you take it is mostly up to you. Running the trade program, senior account management, eCommerce operations. This is a Nova Scotian company with a fast growing national presence.
