HWN Energy, Ltd. is currently seeking to fill the following position:
Job Title: Electrical & Instrumentation Planner
Location: Whitecourt, AB
Reports to: Maintenance Coordinator
Reporting to the Maintenance Coordinator, the E & I Planner is responsible for coordinating and supporting the safe, reliable, and productive maintenance of company equipment and facilities, with a primary focus on electrical, instrumentation, and control systems within the oil and gas environment. This position oversees routine and preventative maintenance planning, work order scheduling, contractor coordination, and CMMS activities while supporting equipment troubleshooting, repairs, and reliability improvements.
Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:
Maintenance Planning & Scheduling
- Develop detailed work plans for electrical and instrumentation maintenance, including preventative, corrective, and project-related work
- Build and maintain short- and long-term maintenance schedules aligned with operational priorities
- Ensure all work orders are properly scoped with labor, materials, tools, and safety requirements identified
- Coordinate planned outages and shutdown activities with operations and engineering
Work Management & Execution Support
- Prepare job packages including procedures, drawings, permits, and safety documentation
- Ensure all required materials, parts, and services are available prior to execution
- Support field teams during execution by resolving scope, material, or scheduling issues
- Track work order progress and adjust plans as required
- Utilize tools such as Power BI and Production Manager to support cost-effective planning and prioritize work activities.
Electrical & Instrumentation Scope
- Plan maintenance for key E&I; systems including:
- PLCs, SCADA systems, and control networks
- Field instrumentation (pressure, temperature, flow, level)
- Power distribution systems, MCCs, and switchgear
- Gas detection, safety systems, and control valves
- Ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes and instrumentation standards
Asset Reliability & Continuous Improvement
- Support preventative maintenance (PM) program development and optimization
- Analyze equipment history to identify recurring issues and reliability improvements
- Participate in root cause analysis and recommend corrective actions
- Drive standardization and best practices across E&I; maintenance activities
Contractor & Vendor Coordination
- Coordinate third-party contractors and service providers for specialized E&I; work
- Support contractor selection, scheduling, and performance monitoring
- Ensure work is completed to scope, quality, and safety expectations
- Assist in overseeing and managing third-party vendor charge rates and invoicing to ensure cost efficiency and accuracy
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all planned work complies with company policies and regulatory requirements, including Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and applicable electrical codes
- Incorporate safety requirements into all job plans (permits, hazard assessments)
- Support safe work execution and participate in incident investigations as required
Systems & Reporting
- Utilize CMMS (e.g. eMaint, Maximo, SAP, or similar) to manage work orders, plans, and asset history
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date maintenance records
- Track and report on KPIs including schedule compliance, backlog, and work order quality
Required Skills and Experience:
· Electrical, Instrumentation,
or related journeyperson designation required; additional technical or maintenance planning experience considered an asset.
· Minimum 7–10 years of experience in electrical, instrumentation, and controls maintenance within the oil and gas or industrial sector.
· Strong knowledge of electrical, instrumentation, control systems, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and equipment reliability.
· Experience with maintenance planning, work order management, scheduling, contractor coordination, and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
· Demonstrated ability to identify equipment reliability issues, develop practical solutions, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
· Strong understanding of applicable regulatory requirements, industry standards, and health, safety, and environmental practices.
· Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively coordinate with Maintenance, Operations, contractors, and other cross-functional teams.
· Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to prioritize competing maintenance requirements in a fast-paced operating environment.
· Demonstrated ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to apprentices, junior technicians, and other maintenance personnel.
· Results-oriented with a strong focus on equipment reliability, minimizing downtime, controlling maintenance costs, and improving operational efficiency.
