Role Overview

We are seeking a compassionate, community minded Settlement & Family Support Worker fluent in Yoruba (with familiarity/fluency in regional Southwestern Nigerian dialects, particularly Ijesha, being a strong asset).

In this role, you will work directly with newly arrived African immigrant families, helping them access local resources, integrate into the community, and overcome language and administrative barriers during their initial settlement period in Winnipeg and surrounding areas.

Key Responsibilities

Settlement Intake & Assessment: Conduct needs assessments for newly arrived immigrant families to identify immediate requirements (housing, school enrollment, healthcare registration, community integration).

Language & Cultural Navigation: Provide direct language support and cultural interpretation for client families during medical, educational, and community appointments.

Family & Case Support: Assist clients with filling out provincial and federal documentation, accessing community advantages, and connecting with local Winnipeg services.

Outreach & Advocacy: Act as a bridge between newcomer families, local Manitoba service providers, and community support groups.

Home & Field Visits:



Meet with families in Winnipeg and nearby Manitoba communities to deliver direct settlement guidance and monitor family well-being.

Qualifications & Skills

Language Requirements

Full professional fluency in English and Yoruba (spoken and written) is required.

Fluency or practical understanding of the Ijesha dialect (Osun State, Southwestern Nigeria) is highly preferred to support specific community demographics.

Education & Experience:

Diploma or degree in Social Work, Human Services, International Relations, Community Development, or equivalent practical experience.

Prior experience working in settlement services, community outreach, or newcomer advocacy in Canada.

Community & Cultural Knowledge:

Deep understanding of African immigrant settlement challenges and cultural nuances.

Knowledge of Winnipeg and Manitoba social service networks, housing resources, and community programs.

Core Competencies

Excellent interpersonal, active listening, and problem solving skills.

Strong organization and case management ability.

Valid driver’s license and reliable access to a vehicle is considered an asset for local community visits.

Pay: $16.00-$18.48 per hour
