JOB OPENING: General Labourer / Driver / Sandblaster
Trecan Combustion Limited is accepting resumes for a full-time, permanent General Labourer / Driver / Sandblaster position. We are a Monday to Friday operation, with shifts running from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. This position reports directly to the Shop Foreman.
We are seeking a reliable, hardworking, and safety-conscious individual to support day-to-day shop and yard operations. This role involves a variety of manual labour, facility maintenance, sandblasting, shipping support, deliveries, and refractory-related tasks. The ideal candidate is physically capable, works well in a team environment, and takes pride in maintaining a clean, protected, and organized workplace.
A daily checklist and task assignments will be provided by the Shop Foreman.
Job Tasks
Yard Maintenance
- Maintain lawns, gardens, bushes, and surrounding grounds, including trimming, pruning, raking, and weeding.
- Remove gravel, snow, ice, leaves, and debris from paved areas, walkways, and egress routes.
- Ensure septic tanks, propane tanks, and outdoor areas remain clear and accessible.
- General outdoor cleanup and upkeep of company property.
Facility Maintenance
- Sweep shop floors and maintain cleanliness throughout the facility.
- Empty garbage and recycling bins and transport materials to designated disposal areas.
- Return tools and equipment to proper storage locations or tool crib.
- Break down cardboard and manage recycling materials.
- Restock water coolers and maintain common areas.
Sandblasting & Paint Shop Support
- Operate abrasive blasting equipment to remove rust, paint, grease, dirt, and scale from snowmelters and other equipment.
- Prepare surfaces for coating and finishing.
- Load blast media into blasting equipment and maintain inventory of consumables.
- Mask and protect surfaces as required during blasting operations.
- Operate sandblasting cabinet and related equipment safely and effectively.
- Maintain blast tent, compressor building,
and blasting equipment in proper working order.
- Assist in the paint shop when required.
- Ensure proper cleanup and disposal of blast media and materials.
Driver Duties
- Perform company pickups and deliveries using company vehicles, generally two days per week.
- Must provide a valid driver’s abstract and remain insurable under company insurance policies.
- Operate company vehicles safely and professionally at all times.
Refractory Installation
- Store, maintain, and prepare refractory molds and related materials.
- Mix, pour, vibrate, and cure refractory products according to procedures.
- Operate grinders and perform finishing work to correct irregularities.
- Maintain quality standards throughout refractory preparation and installation.
General Labour & Shop Support
- Assist with cleaning, packaging, and preparing finished products for shipment.
- Build shipping crates and assist in warehouse/tool crib duties.
- Operate small power tools and assist with forklift operations when required.
- Transport materials and equipment manually or using powered equipment.
- Support machine operators, assemblers, and other shop personnel as needed.
- Transfer fuel and hydraulic fluids when required.
- Attend required training courses and weekly toolbox meetings.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Shop Foreman or Management.
Requirements
- Completion of High School or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract.
- Successful respiratory fit test is a condition of employment.
- Ability to work safely and comply with all company safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to wear all required PPE, including:
- CSA-approved safety boots
- Safety glasses and face shields
- Respirators
- Hearing protection
- Hard hats
- Gloves and other protective equipment as required
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team with a positive attitude.
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and management.
- Ability to read and follow written instructions.
- Ability to safely operate power tools and required equipment.
- Ability to accurately record labour time and complete assigned checklists.
- Zero tolerance for impairment while on duty.
Working Conditions
- Work performed both indoors and outdoors in conditions typical to Nova Scotia weather.
- Exposure to loud noise, fumes, airborne particles, and flying blast media.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, climbing, standing, and lifting.
- Must be able to climb into, over, and under snowmelters.
- Use of ladders and staging equipment as required.
- Ability to lift or move up to 50 lbs without ergonomic assistance.
Union Information This position is unionized and covered under the collective agreement between Trecan and the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada, Local 56 (the “Union”).
Preference will be given to qualified internal applicants. The successful candidate will be required to become, or remain, a member in good standing with the Union.
