Intermediate Mechanical Engineer

Location: Sudbury, Ontario (office-based, with periodic site travel as project needs require)

Work Type: Independent Contractor

Contract Duration: Initial 1-year contract through a recruitment partner, with strong potential to extend through the full multi-year capital project duration.

Overview

Our client, a major Canadian mining operator, is growing the engineering team supporting its ongoing mining and heavy industrial capital projects. This role sits within the project engineering group and is distinct from the company's site-based Construction Resident Engineer positions, which are focused on full-time field execution support.

The Intermediate Mechanical

Engineer is primarily an engineering-and-design role, with a much greater emphasis on front-end engineering work than on rotational field presence.

We are seeking an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer with solid front-end engineering design (FEED) capability - scope development, feasibility and options studies, equipment sizing, layout work, and design basis documentation - who can also support construction and field teams as projects move into execution. This is not a rotational, remote-site field role; it is a Sudbury-based engineering position with occasional site visits.

The successful candidate will work closely with project engineering leadership, construction supervisors, contractors, and QA/QC personnel across multiple heavy industrial and mechanical infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead front-end engineering design (FEED) activities: scope definition, feasibility and options studies, equipment sizing, layout development, and design basis documentation
- Develop and review engineering deliverables to support project sanction and detailed design handover
- Provide technical input during design reviews, and support constructability reviews ahead of execution
- Review drawings, RFIs, submittals, and design/field change requests as required

- Support mechanical infrastructure scopes involving conveyors, shaker screens, paste plant systems, building envelopes, and related heavy industrial equipment
- Provide periodic onsite engineering support during key construction and project execution milestones, as needed
- Act as a liaison between the project engineering office, construction teams, and field operations on design-related matters
- Support QA/QC activities including design-related inspections, NCR reviews, and ITP input where relevant
- Participate in project coordination meetings and progress review discussions
- Identify technical risks, constructability conflicts, and design gaps, and feed lessons learned from execution back into front-end design work
- Maintain accurate design documentation, technical notes, and progress records
- Promote and reinforce a strong HSE and Zero Harm culture in all engineering and site activities
- Coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary teams including engineering, construction, QA/QC, surveying, and contract administration personnel
- Operate with a high level of autonomy, balancing front-end design work with occasional field support

Qualifications

- Mechanical Engineering degree required
- P.Eng designation preferred
- 3–7 years of experience with a meaningful focus on front-end/conceptual engineering design (FEED) in mining or heavy industrial environments
- Demonstrated experience with scope development, feasibility studies, layout and equipment sizing, and design basis work
- Some field or construction-support exposure is beneficial but is not the primary focus of this role
- Familiarity with mechanical systems, conveyors, process plants, and industrial infrastructure
- Solid understanding of engineering drawings, specifications, and design-to-construction handover practices
- Consulting engineering or EPCM experience is considered an asset
- Robust communication, coordination, and stakeholder management skills across multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to work independently in a Sudbury-based, office-first engineering role with occasional site travel
