Legal Aid Alberta is looking for a full-time, permanent IT Business Analyst who is as comfortable digging into data models and system integrations as they are eliciting requirements from stakeholders. You will work at the intersection of business need and technical delivery – translating problems into specs and user stories that developers can build from and validating that what gets built solves the right problem. This position will appeal to an individual that enjoys working at a small to mid-size company, likes to take initiative, is client focused and is exceptionally strong in delivering high-quality results and is comfortable working directly with technical teams. While this is a remote opportunity, candidates must be able to travel to Edmonton and/or Calgary offices for meetings and workshops as required.

As a publicly funded, non-profit organization, Legal Aid Alberta provides affordable legal services in family law, domestic violence, child welfare, immigration, and youth and adult criminal defense. We are Alberta-wide, with 300 staff and 1,200 private practice lawyers helping people overcome their legal challenges in more than 75 communities across the province.

Reporting to the Manager, IT Services, some of the key responsibilities include:

- Requirements & Process Analysis:
- Works with stakeholders to identify issues or opportunities to improve complicated business processes, provides in-depth analysis and suggestions for business process improvement.
- Elicits, analyzes, validates and manages detailed functional and non-functional requirements using focus groups, brainstorming, workshops, surveys and other techniques.
- Responsible for requirements traceability, with the ability to contribute to business application test planning by assisting in the creation of test plans, test suites and the execution of solution testing as required.
- Translates business requirements into well-structured user stories with clear acceptance criteria, ensuring development teams have the detail needed to design, build, and test effectively.
- Participates in the evaluation, prioritization and requirements gathering for ongoing system changes, enhancements and selection.
- Strategic Analysis & Facilitation:
- Influence business leaders to adopt best practices and procedures.
- Documents and leads impact assessments, business cases and feasibility studies.
- Assists in project planning, identifies project risks and issues.
- Delivery of regular updates, or presentations on work to senior management or business owners.
- IIBA Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) Certification is considered an asset.

Knowledge: Technical & IT Knowledge

- Advanced knowledge of information technology architectures including integration and application software, databases, subsystem components and software.




- Advanced knowledge of emerging methods, procedures, tools, technology, best practices and techniques within the IT industry.
- Experience working across Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and Agile delivery frameworks
- Experience working on projects of varying complexity, including multi-system and integrated environments
- Advanced knowledge of application security practices and procedures.

Skills: Strategic & Analytical Skills

- Extensive experience and knowledge related to strategic planning, strategic information management, business analysis, requirements management, change management, data design, conceptual design, process re-engineering theory, system development life cycle, research techniques and project management methodologies and practices.
- Strong critical thinking and evaluation skills.
- In-depth analytical skills, and ability to use innovation and extensive domain knowledge to problem-solve complicated business issues.
- Ability to work in a complex and highly energetic project environment, responsible for multiple concurrent projects and deliverables.
- Ability to embrace and work effectively with ambiguity to create order from complicated tasks.

Data Analysis, AI and Automation Skills

- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data and translate findings into actionable business recommendations.
- Experience developing dashboards, reports, and data visualizations using tools such as Power BI.
- Knowledge of business process automation technologies, including Power Automate, PowerShell, and other low-code automation platforms.
- Ability to identify and evaluate opportunities for the application of AI and automation to improve business outcomes.
- Understanding of data governance, data quality, and reporting best practices.

Communication & Facilitation Skills

- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to clearly communicate ideas and to discuss technical issues with non-technical clients.
- Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, consultation, presentation, leadership, verbal and written communication skills, particularly when communicating original concepts.
- Ability to facilitate requirements sessions, training and present to large groups.

Other Skills:

Technical Analysis & Design

- Conducts insightful, ad hoc analyses to investigate ongoing or one-time operational issues or service delivery challenges.
- Delivers detailed design specifications including business rules, user interface designs, report designs, requirements traceability and use cases.
- Prepares technical reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing information and trends.
- Provides leadership and guidance on data-driven decision making and the strategic use of AI and automation technologies.
- Champions continuous improvement through the application of analytics, automation, and emerging technologies.

Data Analysis, AI and Automation





- Develops end-user data gathering and reporting solutions using available toolsets such as Power BI.
- Conducts meaningful data analysis to identify trends, opportunities, risks, and actionable insights that support informed decision-making.
- Creates automations for business processes using tools such as Power Automate, PowerShell, and other approved automation platforms.
- Identifies opportunities to leverage AI, automation, and data-driven solutions to improve operational efficiency, service delivery, and user experience.
- Owns configuration management for business applications, ensuring changes are documented, tested, and deployed in a controlled manner that maintains system integrity and auditability.

Testing, QA & Training:

- Participates in the development and delivery of training and training materials on existing, new or changed business applications or processes.
- Contribute to testing activities by assisting, developing and executing test cases, maintaining requirements traceability, and validating system changes against business needs.
- Assist or advise on change management activities related to assigned work or projects.

Other:

- Foster a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and transparency across stakeholders and business units.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior business analysts to build capability within the team.
- Advocate for the customer perspective, demonstrating empathy, active listening, and solution-oriented problem-solving in stakeholder interactions.
- Perform additional duties as required in support of business and project objectives.

Education and Experience:

- Post secondary education in business administration, computing science/technology or a related field. Acceptable combination of education and experience will be considered.
- 5 - 8 years experience as a Business Analyst, or combination of applicable experience in business areas.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment while maintaining an organization-wide perspective.
- Operate effectively in a matrix environment; organize work, manage time and priorities and consistently meet deadlines, while working independently on multiple and complex assignments.
- Interpret and apply organizational operations, policies, legislation and regulations while assisting with the development of new business processes and solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and contribute to numerous concurrent projects and deliverables.
- Excellent skills in Microsoft (or similar) suite of products.
- Ability and willingness to provide leadership, guidance and mentorship to junior resources as required.
