POSITION OVERVIEW:
Does designing customer-centric solutions for next generation AI-integrated news media products excite you? Do you love creating holistic user experiences, design systems, and the prospect of solving for the needs of today’s current news, business and financial readers?
As Lead Product Designer, you will play a leading role on The Globe’s product design team to create a compelling user experience across both the website and iOS/Android apps. Bring your chops building and shipping complex applications or software to play a key role in ensuring that we continually evolve the user experience to keep up with the needs of our customers, technology and industry conditions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design world-class experiences that allow our audience to achieve their goals using The Globe and Mail’s digital products in a way that feels simple, elegant and understandable
- Establish a design vision for your product program area and ensure that it guides all your action as a designer through research, interface concepts, prototypes, and UI elements to elevate the user experience across all digital products
- Collaborate with and mentor other designers on the team
- Conduct user research and feedback sessions to validate user problems and design solutions with our audience.
- Collaborate with product manager partners, engineers, and stakeholders in Editorial and Business from discovery through to delivery.
- Contribute to our design system to ensure consistency across platforms and products.
- Contribute to our product strategy
- Evangelize the impact of your work and learning across the organization
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 8+ years of experience designing digital products.
- Passion for user experience and design thinking, a strong desire to be innovative within the news, content publishing and media industry.
- Demonstrable conceptual thinking and clarity in oral communication and documentation.
- Orientation to detail and ability to work quickly at all stages of the design cycle to create prototypes and wireframes to visualize your ideas, design specifications, finished front-end designs and design QA.
- Confidence through experience crafting research studies, interviewing customers and reporting results to directors and executives.
- Experience using and contributing to design systems
- Extensive experience using design tools such as AI prototyping combined with Figma and other tools for communication such as Miro, Microsoft Office and Google docs.
- Experience working with data and metrics; proven ability to translate both qualitative and quantitative improvements to the user experience.
- Experience using AI to optimize your workflow and process.
- Experience leading workshops with team members and stakeholders.
- Experience designing experiences that use AI and machine learning.
- Basic front-end coding comprehension such as CSS, HTML, how digital tech works on a high level to facilitate communication with your engineering partners.

Your portfolio should include case studies that demonstrate:
- Your experience framing problems and finding opportunities to support both user and business needs
- Strategic initiative and innovation
- The process by which you develop your design solutions, including research you did and the constraints and trade-offs you encountered
- Your criteria for success and how you measure your solutions and outcomes
- What you learned from the process and how it’s made you a better thinker and designer
- Leadership in your role with immediate team members and stakeholders
- Collaborative maturity, good design taste, judgment and critical thinking
SALARY: The base salary for this role ranges from $107,600 to $129,120 per year. Placement within this range depends on a candidate’s level of experience, technical skills, and alignment with the role’s requirements. Candidates who have been identified as meeting the role’s requirements can expect to be near the midpoint of this range, while the upper end is reserved for those with specialized expertise or a strong track record of success in comparable roles. This role may be eligible for The Globe’s Annual Incentive Plan, which is based on a combination of corporate and revenue objectives and rewards individual performance.
