The Leader, Mi’kmaw Culture and Language shall be responsible for providing leadership in the area of Mi’kmaw Language and Culture in support of closing the gap and raising the bar for Mi’kmaw and Indigenous students. The Leader will also provide leadership, supervision and evaluation to a group of Mi’kmaw/Indigenous Student Support Workers. Through expertise in Mi’kmaw ways of being, knowing and doing, the Leader of Mi’kmaw Culture and Language will support student success plans and work with classroom teachers to support the Treaty Education framework.
The Leader of Mi’kmaw Language and Culture will fulfill a co-modeling, co-learning and collaborative role. The Leader will apply knowledge of current research in Mi’kmaw/Indigenous education with a focus on mentoring teachers to facilitate change in a positive manner. Working collaboratively as a member of the Diversity team, the Leader of Mi’kmaw Culture and Language will report directly to the Regional Coordinator, Mi’kmaw Education/Services.
Qualifications
(a) Designated position for a Mi’kmaw person. Excellent knowledge of Mi’kmaw history, culture, traditions and educational issues are required;
(b) Excellent ability to demonstrate Mi’kmaw Ways of being and knowing;
( c)
Excellent knowledge of Treaty Education; fosters components of Treaty Education through a Mi’kmaw lens;
(d) Strong commitment to reconciliation;
(e) Experience working with Mi’kmaw youth/students, communities, Elders and organizations;
(f) Post-secondary education (i.e. Bachelor degree in Education, Certificate in Adult Learning, etc.) or equivalent obtained through relevant training and experience;
(g) Knowledge of or fluency in Mi’kmaw Language is an asset;
(h) Previous leadership and supervisory experience working in a unionized environment is considered an asset;
(i) Ability to travel to schools within the HRM.
Salary:
This is a PEG (Professional Employees Group) position classified on the Education Entities Non-Union Compensation Framework at Band 9 with a salary range between $82,350 to $102,938.
