Nursing Supervisor (RN/LPN)

SALARY WILL BE BASED ON THE NSNU AGREEMENT

POSITION SCOPE

The Nursing Supervisor works under the direct supervision of the Digby/Clare Home Support Agency/Agency de Soutien à Domicile’s Agency Director. The incumbent is responsible for the supervision and continuing education of continuing care assistants (CCA) to ensure compliance with service delivery standards and the provision of protected, quality, client services.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

SUPERVISION

- Supervises CCAs during provision of client care, with the frequency being determined by the need to ensure safe, quality services,
- Models and enforces service provision which respects and protects the rights of the clients and maintains privacy and confidentiality,
- Conducts CCA supervisions and performance appraisals according to Digby / Clare Home Support Agency / Agence de Soutien à Domicile policy,
- Ensures necessary follow-up is taken to resolve concerns identified during CCA supervisions and performance appraisals,
- Strives to ensure a professional image is maintained by CCAs,
- Provides professional advice, guidance, and coaching to CCAs, including clinical issues of stable, predictable clients.
- Accompanies CCAs on initial visit to client’s home when determined necessary by client acuity and / or complication of care, and;
- Works collaboratively with educational institutions to ensure clinical placements are provided according to the standards determined by the CCA Advisory Committee.

COMMUNICATION
- Development and ongoing evaluation and revisions to client care plans according to Continuing Care and other professional assessments including CCA observations,
- Obtains client consent prior to service delivery
- Reads and responds, as necessary, to all audit activity and all progress reports,
- Reviews incident reports, client satisfaction surveys, client complaints, and CCA concerns in a timely manner and conducts inquiries as necessary,
- Participates in the HSW / CCA staff disciplinary and termination processes in accordance with the Digby / Clare Home Support Agency / Agence de Soutien à Domicile policies,
- Requests and attends client case conferences as required, with relevant stakeholders,
- Documents all in-home supervisory visits and communicates relevant feed-back to the CCA,
- Maintains communication with all home support staff according to Digby / Clare Home Support Agency / Agence de Soutien à Domicile policies,
- Reports to Continuing Care and the Digby / Clare Home Support Agency / Agency de Soutien à Domicile’s Director as necessary, information concerning changes in client’s condition / progress, incidents, complaints, abuse, unlawful conduct, illegal activities, etc which affect the provision of client care,
- Interprets relevant legislated Acts, Regulations and Digby / Clare Home Support Agency / Agence de Soutien à Domicile policies and procedures, and communicates the information to CCAs,
- Focuses on employee engagement and promotes a healthy and motivating work environment,
- Ensures appropriate referrals to OT/PT, Challenging Behavior, Adult Protection and other collaborative practitioners are followed up and/or relayed to Care Coordinators as needed,
- Participates in establishing new policies/procedures,
- Assists in the revision, implementation and reviewing of policies and procedures,




- Communicates with Staff regarding do not place requests/conflicts of interest,
- Updates Staff off/Limitation file as required and communicates with team members,
- Completes exit interviews with CCAs

CCA PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING
- Assists with the CCA recruitment process.
- Organizes and conducts CCA orientations according to Digby / Clare Home Support Agency / Agency de Soutien à Domicile’s policy,
- Provides client-specific instruction to CCAs within their scope of practice and to her/his knowledge, skills, and abilities,
- Certifies / endorses demonstrated competencies in home support staff,
- Identifies CCA continuing education needs, and;
- Facilitates or develops and provides training/educational sessions or coaching, according to identified CCA needs.

ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
- Assists with routine office procedures, record keeping and compilation of monthly and statistical reports, as required,
- Works collaboratively with the Digby / Clare Home Support Agency / Agency de Soutien à Domicile’s Director to ensure that delivery of service is responsible and appropriate,
- Collaborates and consults with staff to ensure continuous quality improvement, and;
- Performs other duties that may be assigned from time to time.

PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
- Ensures delegation of tasks/functions to home support workers is in accordance with relevant licensing body (CRNNS Standards for Nursing Practice for Registered Nurses and CLPNNS Standards of Practice for Licensed Practical Nurses),
- Maintains the professional competencies required to practice safely in the home support setting,
- Remains in compliance with the CRNNS licensing requirements/CLPNNS licensing requirements and;
- Participates in an annual performance evaluation.

LABOUR RELATIONS
- Assists the Digby / Clare Home Support Agency/Agency de Soutien à Domicile with negotiation and administration of the collective agreement including:
- Assistance to the Management Bargaining Committee by providing input concerning collective bargaining proposals and the formulation of Union proposals
- Participation as a Management Bargaining committee member.
- Provides input, as part of the Management team, to assist in resolving Union grievances.

OCCASIONAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Serves on and / or chairs committees as required by the Agency Director
- Attends meeting, conferences, and continuing education sessions as required, and
- Functions as part of the selection team for hiring new CCAs.

KNOWLEDGE / SPECIAL SKILLS:
- Strong communication, interpersonal and public relations skills,
- Ability to lead, motivate and support others,
- Excellent time management skills and ability to work in multi-task situations,
- Strong judgment, organizational skills, and team orientation to problem solving,
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction,
- Knowledge of community-based resources and ability to liaise with same,
- Good telephone, written communication,



and word processing skills,
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with internal and external organizations relevant to the delivery of client care,
- Sensitivity to and an awareness of the needs of seniors, persons with disabilities and other home support clients and;
- Ability to recognize and act according to the Agency policies and procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- For Registered Nurse Supervisor positions: a minimum of two years supervisory experience,
- For Licensed Practical Nurse Supervisor positions: a minimum of two to five years’ supervisory experience,
- Experience in geriatric, community health or home care nursing with an understanding of social programs, and;
- Experience as an adult educator an asset.

CREDENTIAL, LICENSE, TRADE CERTIFICATION, PROFESSSIONAL DESIGNATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Registered Nurses must possess a current license with the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia,
- Licensed Practical Nurses must possess a current license with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Nova Scotia,
- Possess a valid driver’s license, and;
- Access to a reliable automobile.

JUDGEMENT AND INITIATIVE REQUIREMENTS:
- A high degree of tact and judgment is required, especially in dealing with the general public, clients, and CCAs. The Nursing Supervisor must have the ability to organize and initiate own daily work schedule, be highly motivated and self-directed.

NATURE AND EXTENT OF CONTACTS:
- Within Digby / Clare Home Support Agency / Agence de Soutien à Domicile: Daily contact with the Agency Director, CCAs and administrative staff.
- External: Frequent daily contact with Continuing Care (Care Coordinators), clients and / or their family members.
- Occasional contact with other Home Support Agencies, adult protection workers, palliative care team members, and other community health practitioners (PT, OT, Dr, etc).

TYPE AND LEVEL OF SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
- Responsible for providing supervision of personal care and other in-home tasks completed by the Digby / Clare Home Support Agency/Agence de Soutien à Domicile CCAs

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL DEMANDS:
- Usual working hours are Monday to Friday. However, scheduling flexibility is required to meet deadlines, attend meetings, and plan and participate in Digby / Clare Home Support Agency/Agency de Soutien à Domicile’s events and activities,
- Portions of work tasks such as proofreading, copying, or word processing may involve some eyestrain, and;
- Mental demands may be high at times due to frequent interruptions and multi-tasking.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT (UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS):
- The Digby / Clare Home Support Agency / Agence de Soutien à Domicile operates in a smoke-free, scent-free workplace, and
- The position can involve potential driving in adverse weather conditions.
