The Splatsin are the southernmost tribe of the Secwépemc Nation, the largest Interior Salish speaking First Nation in Canada.

Position Purpose

The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Officer is responsible for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of workplace health and safety programs across all Splatsin departments. Working within a unique governance structure, Splatsin is a federally recognized Indigenous Nation that aligns its occupational health and safety practices with provincial standards established by WorkSafe BC. The OHS Officer ensures compliance, promotes a proactive safety culture, and integrates community values, traditions, and holistic wellness into all safety initiatives.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Health & Safety Program Development

- Develop, implement, and maintain OHS policies, procedures, and programs across all departments
- Standardize safety practices while allowing flexibility for department-specific needs
- Integrate culturally relevant and community-based approaches to safety and wellness

Compliance & Regulatory Oversight

- Ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC Occupational Health & Safety Regulation
- Monitor legislative updates and advise leadership on implications
- Act as primary liaison with WorkSafeBC and other regulatory or funding bodies
- Maintain required documentation, statistics, and compliance records





Hazard Identification & Risk Management

- Conduct inspections in diverse environments across all departments
- Identify hazards and implement corrective actions
- Develop Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), risk assessments, and Safe Work Procedures

Incident Reporting & Investigation

- Lead investigations into incidents, injuries, and near misses
- Ensure timely reporting in accordance with WorkSafeBC requirements
- Track trends and recommend preventative strategies
- Maintain confidentiality and culturally respectful processes

Training & Education

- Coordinate and deliver safety training, including:
- WHMIS, First Aid, Naloxone Training, PPE use
- Equipment and task-specific safety
- Provide orientation for new employees across departments Specific to Health and Saftey
- Support supervisors in meeting their safety responsibilities

Joint Health & Safety Committees

- Establish and support Joint Health & Safety Committees (JHSC)
- Facilitate meetings, maintain records, and track action items
- Promote employee participation and shared responsibility

Emergency Preparedness & Response

- Coordinate drills and training exercises
- Collaborate with leadership and staff for

Wellness & Cultural Integration





- Promote holistic safety: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being
- Incorporate Splatsin values, traditions, and cultural practices into safety programs
- Support initiatives that foster a respectful, healthy, and secure workplace

Position Requirements: Education & Experience

- Diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety or related field
- 3–5 years of OHS experience, preferably in a multi-department or public-sector environment
- Experience working with Indigenous communities is a strong asset

Certifications

- OHS designation (e.g., CRSP, NCSO, or equivalent preferred)
- First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
- WHMIS certification

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Strong knowledge of WorkSafe BC regulations and standards
- Ability to apply legislation in a blended federal–provincial context
- Strong communication, facilitation, and training skills
- Cultural awareness and respect for Indigenous governance and traditions
- Ability to work effectively across diverse departments and environments
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills

Additional Requirements:

- Current BC driver’s license.
- Clean Criminal Record

Job Types: Full-time, Monday – Friday Renumeration: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
