Course description: Introduction to providing personal support to individuals involved in conflicts. Overview of selected models of individual and group coaching. Development of certain basic skills for this type of intervention (including self-awareness, emotional intelligence, active and empathetic listening, communication, and dealing with resistance, etc.) through simulations and exercises.
This course takes a multidisciplinary approach to trauma, disrupted response mechanisms, and decision-making in crisis situations. It focuses on the factors that influence the impact of trauma, with the goal of improving understanding of conflict and psychological transformation. More specifically, it explores how political instability, violent crises, and armed conflicts influence human behavior and mental well-being, particularly with regard to trauma.
Students will learn how individuals respond to intense stress, anxiety, and grief, and how societies can either fall apart or rebuild together after a conflict or disaster.
Required experience and qualifications:
- Passive proficiency in the second official language
- Sensitivity to multiple differences (including abilities, genders, and cultures) and to students' concerns.
- Proficiency with both in-person and online learning tools
- Academic qualifications, practical experience, and teaching skills.
- Ability to facilitate emotionally charged discussions in the classroom (by ensuring trauma-informed teaching, creating safe learning spaces, and encouraging respectful debate).
- Clinical or field experience, for example as a researcher, counselor, therapist, or humanitarian worker in conflict or crisis zones or centers. Training in psychology and/or conflict studies is also required, as well as multidisciplinary knowledge—for example, the ability to teach about trauma drawing on psychology, sociology, anthropology, and history.
- A thorough understanding of past and current global conflicts, as well as how different cultures view mental health.
