Course description: This course examines contemporary conflicts in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and surrounding regions. Taking a historical and regional perspective, it explores the intersecting roles of ethnicity, gender, religion, and colonial and postcolonial legacies, as well as the influence of state and non-state actors and internal and external forces. The course also examines approaches to peacebuilding, mediation, conflict resolution, and the prospects for sustainable peace.
Required experience and qualifications:
- PhD in Political science, international relation or in a related discipline.
- Knowledge of the region and expertise on the contemporary conflicts in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran,
Central Asia and related regions more generally; historical perspective on the relations and tensions between these regional actors; different internal socio-political conflicts of each contexts, including ethnic, gender and religious conflicts; colonial and postcolonial perspectives on these conflicts; the role of internal and external forces in shaping these conflicts; the role of state and non-state actors in conflict resolution; mechanisms for peace, mediation and conflict resolution; what place for a sustainable peace?
- Passive proficiency in the second official language
- Sensitivity to multiple differences (including abilities, genders, and cultures) and to students' concerns.
- Proficiency with both in-person and online learning tools
