Job Summary
We are seeking respite support for our 17-year-old son, who has autism and epilepsy. He is non-speaking and communicates using an AAC device. He enjoys music, Disney and Pixar movies, books, sensory activities and relaxing in his favourite chair. He thrives with familiar routines, patient support and a calm, predictable setting.
We are looking for someone kind, dependable and compassionate who will take the time to get to know him, support his communication and help him safely participate in activities at home and in the community.
Basic Respite Care Duties
- Provide safe, attentive one-on-one supervision
- Assist with personal care and daily living tasks as needed
- Prepare simple meals and snacks
- Support communication using an AAC device
- Participate in preferred activities, such as music, books, movies, and walks
- Follow established routines and provide calm, consistent support
- Help manage transitions, anxiety and emotional regulation
- Administer medication as directed, if required
- Recognize and respond appropriately to seizures and other medical concerns
- Complete light tidying related to meals and activities
- Provide parents with a brief update at the end of each shift
Requirements
- Passion for caring for individuals with disabilities
- Knowledge of medication administration procedures and safety standards
- Strong caregiving skills combined with patience, empathy, and excellent communication abilities
- Ability to perform light cleaning tasks and meal preparation efficiently
- Experience working in home care environments is highly desirable
Our family is seeking interested individuals who are available to work 1-3 shifts per week. Mainly evenings and weekends, with the extension of school PD Days and vacation days as needed. Pay: $20.00 per hour
Expected hours: 5.0 – 20.0 per week
