ABOUT CANEIL
Canadian Engineering and Inspection Ltd. (CANEIL) was established in 2011 to bring the separate pieces of asset integrity management together under one roof. We combine in-house mechanical, materials, electrical, civil, and structural engineering with conventional and advanced NDE, inspection, and asset management services for owner-users in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical, power generation, utilities, and mining across Canada and the United States. Our offices are in Edmonton, Alberta and the Houston, Texas area.
POSITION SUMMARY
We are expanding our asset integrity team and are seeking an RBI Engineer to build and maintain deterioration models and inspection strategies for fixed equipment and piping at refineries, upgraders, gas plants, and petrochemical facilities. The work runs from interpreting inspection and NDE results, through damage mechanism assessment and RBI modelling, to the reports, inspection scopes, and inspection maps that inspectors and planners execute in the field.
Roughly five to ten years of experience in inspection, fixed equipment integrity, corrosion, or materials engineering is the ideal target. We encourage candidates at all experience levels to apply; the position level and compensation will be adjusted accordingly.
This role reports out of our Edmonton office, but in-person attendance is not required and candidates working remotely across Canada will be considered. Our clients generally perform RBI in GE Vernova APM (Meridium); substantial experience in a comparable platform may be considered equivalent.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Inspection data. Review and interpret visual and internal inspection reports, UT thickness data, and results from a range of NDE methods (LPI, MPI, SWUT, PAUT, TOFD, eddy current, radiography). Establish corrosion rates, minimum required thickness, and remaining life per API 510, 570, and 653, and identify measurement error and outliers before they reach the risk model.
- Engineering documents. Read and interpret PFDs, P&IDs;, technical data sheets, inspection scopes, material test reports, line designation tables, and fabrication drawings to establish materials of construction, design conditions, corrosion loops, and circuit definitions. Identify data gaps and work with clients and inspectors to close them.
- Damage mechanisms and RBI modelling. Apply judgement on refinery processes, engineering materials, and damage mechanisms per API 571 (sulfidic and naphthenic acid corrosion, HTHA, wet H2S damage, amine and chloride SCC, CUI, creep, fatigue, erosion-corrosion, embrittlement) to compile and analyse deterioration models in RBI software. Calculate probability and consequence of failure, set inspection intervals and effectiveness, and re-baseline after turnarounds and process changes per API 580 and 581.
- Regulatory and program support. Support owner-user pressure equipment integrity management programs, including ABSA AB-512 in Alberta,
and contribute to integrity operating window development and exceedance reviews.
- Reporting. Prepare RBI study reports, criticality assessments, and condition evaluations; develop inspection scopes, work packages, and inspection maps including CML placement; and present findings in client meetings and RBI validation workshops.
- Coordination. Work with process, operations, and reliability engineers; turnaround and maintenance planners; inspectors; and project managers, and communicate risk and inspection recommendations in terms non-specialists can act on.
- Team and quality. Perform technical review and QA/QC of models, corrosion rate assumptions, and inspection plans, mentor junior engineers, and support project scoping and level-of-effort estimates.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Materials, Metallurgical, or Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. An engineering technology diploma with substantial, directly relevant fixed equipment integrity experience will also be considered.
- Working knowledge of RBI methodology per API RP 580 and 581, and of damage mechanism identification and assessment per API RP 571.
- Familiarity with ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 1, ASME B31.1 and B31.3, API 530 and 560, API 510, 570, and 653, and with ASME and ASTM material specifications.
- Ability to read and interpret PFDs, P&IDs;, line designation tables, material test reports, and fabrication drawings, and to analyse thickness data and calculate corrosion rates and remaining life.
- Strong Excel skills for handling large inspection datasets, plus general proficiency with Microsoft Teams, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, and comfort working in enterprise data management, document control, and archiving systems.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills, with experience preparing client-ready engineering reports.
- P.Eng. designation with APEGA, or eligibility to register within a reasonable timeframe. Engineers-in-Training are welcome to apply.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- API 580 certification, and/or API 510, 570, or 653 inspector certification.
- Hands-on experience with GE Vernova APM (Meridium), or comparable platforms such as PCMS, Credo, Visions, IDMS, or Antea.
- Direct experience in a refinery, upgrader, gas plant, or petrochemical facility, including turnaround scope development and field support.
- Fitness-for-service experience per API 579-1/ASME FFS-1, and repair evaluation per ASME PCC-2.
- Familiarity with AMPP (formerly NACE) standards and API RP 572, 574, 576, 577, and 578.
- Field inspection or NDE background, or experience witnessing and interpreting advanced NDE.
- Experience with Power BI, Power Query, VBA, Python, or SQL for inspection data handling.
- Previous consulting experience delivering concurrent assignments for external clients.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This is primarily an office- or home-office-based engineering role. Occasional travel to client sites in Canada or the United States may be required for workshops, unit walkdowns, and turnaround support; site visits require standard PPE, site orientation, fit testing, and applicable safety training, which CANEIL provides or arranges. Workload may increase ahead of and during client turnarounds.
COMPENSATION AND PERKS
- Expected base salary range of $80,000–$130,000 per year, based on experience, qualifications, designation, certifications, and overall suitability. Earlier-career candidates will be considered at a commensurate level, and candidates with significantly greater experience or a record of leading RBI programs may be considered above the range. All candidates are assessed individually.
