Senior Accountant
Overview
We are seeking an experienced, highly capable Senior Accountant to join our team in a hands-on accounting and financial management role.
This position is ideal for a CPA who is comfortable working in a fast-paced business environment where priorities can change quickly and cash flow requires careful daily management. The successful candidate will not simply review financial information—they will be actively involved in the day-to-day accounting, cash-flow management, government agency matters, vendor management, reconciliations, reporting, and problem solving.
The Senior Accountant must have a strong understanding of accounting principles, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to identify financial priorities and provide practical solutions.
A CPA designation and strong hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online are required.
Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, bank and credit card reconciliations, and journal entries.
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements and ensure financial records are complete and accurate.
- Manage month-end and year-end accounting processes.
- Maintain accurate balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules.
- Monitor cash flow closely and assist management with short-term and longer-term cash-flow planning.
- Work effectively within a very tight cash-flow environment, determining which financial obligations require immediate attention.
- Identify critical vendors and suppliers whose payments must be prioritized to avoid disruption to business operations.
- Develop and maintain accurate cash-flow forecasts and payment schedules.
- Communicate and negotiate professionally with vendors regarding outstanding balances and payment arrangements.
- Assist with debt negotiations and payment arrangements when required.
- Communicate directly and confidently with government agencies,
including responding to inquiries, resolving account issues, providing documentation, and negotiating payment arrangements where appropriate.
- Ensure government remittances, filings, and other financial obligations are properly tracked and addressed.
- Assist with CRA-related accounting matters, including GST/HST and payroll remittances.
- Review accounts for discrepancies and proactively investigate and correct accounting issues.
- Maintain accurate intercompany accounts and reconcile due-to/due-from balances where applicable.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
- Provide management with clear, timely information regarding cash position, outstanding obligations, financial risks, and upcoming commitments.
- Work directly in QuickBooks Online and maintain accurate and organized accounting records.
- Improve accounting procedures, internal controls, and financial processes where necessary.
- Work collaboratively with management, administrative staff, external accountants, government agencies, lenders, vendors, and other stakeholders.
- Take ownership of accounting issues and follow them through to resolution.
Skills & Qualifications
- CPA designation is required.
- Significant senior-level accounting experience.
- Strong hands-on proficiency with QuickBooks Online is required.
- Excellent understanding of Canadian accounting practices and financial reporting.
- Strong knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and month-end/year-end processes.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and forecast cash flow in a financially constrained environment.
- Ability to assess competing financial obligations and determine which vendors and payments are critical to ongoing operations.
- Experience communicating and negotiating with creditors and vendors.
- Comfortable dealing directly with government agencies and resolving financial or account-related issues.
- Experience with debt negotiation and payment arrangements is strongly preferred.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail.
- Able to prioritize effectively when dealing with multiple urgent financial matters.
- Strong judgment and the ability to recognize financial risks before they become larger problems.
- Excellent command of the English language, both written and spoken, is required.
- Strong skilled communication and negotiation skills.
- Able to communicate complex financial information clearly to management and non-accounting personnel.
- Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of responsibilities.
- Able to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Must be willing to be hands-on with the accounting work rather than functioning solely in a supervisory or advisory capacity.
The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a practical, experienced CPA who understands that strong accounting is about more than producing financial statements. You can look at the company's current cash position, upcoming obligations, vendor requirements, government commitments, and operational needs and quickly identify what needs attention first. You are comfortable getting into the details, solving problems, communicating with creditors and government agencies, and working alongside management to keep the company's finances organized and moving forward.
