Position Summary
We are seeking a licensed Senior Electrical Engineer to provide part-time, remote technical leadership across oil and gas and industrial facility projects. The role is centred on independent review and professional approval of electrical drawings and design packages prepared by other engineers and designers, together with ongoing mentorship and technical guidance of the design team.
The successful candidate will act as a senior authority on medium-voltage and low-voltage power distribution, motor control, and PLC-based control systems. Work is performed remotely, with flexibility to accommodate a part-time schedule. Professional registration in Alberta is required. Willingness and ability to obtain licensure in other Canadian provinces, as project needs arise, is essential.
Key Responsibilities
Design Review and Professional Approval
- Review electrical drawings, specifications, calculations, and design packages prepared by internal and external designers for technical accuracy, constructability, completeness, and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Check and comment on single-line diagrams, motor control schematics, power distribution layouts, cable schedules, hazardous area classification drawings, panel schedules, and related deliverables.
- Approve and professionally authenticate (stamp) electrical engineering documents in accordance with APEGA requirements and, where registered, the requirements of other provincial associations.
- Identify design deficiencies, code issues, and constructability risks; issue clear, actionable review comments and verify that comments are closed.
- Confirm that designs are consistent with project basis of design, client specifications, and company standards.
Mentorship and Technical Guidance
- Mentor, guide, and advise electrical designers and junior-to-intermediate engineers on design approach, code interpretation, equipment selection, and drawing quality.
- Provide timely technical direction on medium-voltage and low-voltage power distribution, motor control centres, starters, VFDs, protection and coordination, and PLC control interfaces.
- Support designers in developing good engineering judgement, documentation discipline, and professional practice habits.
- Participate in design coordination discussions and offer senior-level advice to project teams as required.
Technical Execution Support
- Advise on electrical system architecture for oil and gas and industrial facilities, including power generation interfaces, distribution, grounding, and motor control.
- Review PLC control philosophy, I/O allocation, and electrical–controls interface drawings to confirm consistency with power and motor control design.
- Support interpretation of the Canadian Electrical Code, CSA standards, IEEE practices, and applicable client and industry specifications.
- Contribute to lessons learned, standard drawing updates, and quality improvements within the electrical discipline.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program, or equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable for professional registration.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with the Association of Skilled Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
- Willingness and ability to obtain professional licensure in other Canadian provinces and territories as project requirements arise.
- Minimum 10 years of electrical engineering experience, with substantial work on oil and gas and industrial facilities.
- Demonstrated experience with medium-voltage power distribution and motor control (typically up to 25 kV or as applicable to the candidate’s project history).
- Demonstrated experience with low-voltage power distribution and motor control, including MCCs, motor starters, VFDs, and associated protection.
- Working knowledge of PLC-based control systems and the electrical interface to instrumentation and controls.
- Proven ability to independently check, comment on, and approve electrical drawings produced by others.
- Robust written communication skills suitable for remote review comments, technical notes, and mentoring conversations.
- Ability to work effectively on a part-time remote basis, manage priorities independently, and respond within agreed review turnaround times.
- Eligibility to work in Canada.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in an EPCM, consulting, or owner-operator environment on upstream, midstream, or industrial facility projects.
- Familiarity with hazardous area classification and electrical design in classified locations.
- Experience with power system studies (load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, and arc flash) and related software (e.g., ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower).
- Prior experience authenticating professional work products and acting as responsible engineer for a discipline package.
- Existing registration, or prior registration, with one or more additional Canadian engineering regulators.
- Experience mentoring designers and engineers in a distributed or hybrid team.
Work Arrangement
- Part-time engagement. Hours will be agreed based on project review volume and may vary from week to week.
- Fully remote. Occasional virtual meetings with the design team and project leadership are expected.
- Site visits are not a regular requirement of this role. Any exceptional travel would be discussed in advance.
- The engineer must maintain a suitable remote workspace and reliable connectivity to review drawing packages and participate in calls.
Professional PracticeThe incumbent is expected to practise in accordance with the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act (Alberta), APEGA’s practice standards on authenticating professional work products, and the codes of ethics of any other association with which they are registered. Qualified stamps and signatures will be applied only to work the engineer has personally reviewed and for which they accept professional responsibility.
