Reporting to the Store Manager, the Assistant Store Manager supports the day-to-day operation of Squamish Valley Gas Bar. The role provides operational oversight and on-floor supervision across gas, cigarette, and convenience retail, with a focus on customer service, staff support, cash control, and inventory. The Assistant Store Manager leads by example on the floor and acts as the senior presence when the Store Manager is unavailable.
This position requires an open availability including evenings and weekends and statutory holidays.
Key accountabilities
Day-to-Day Store Operations
- Ensure workers report to their scheduled shifts and arrange coverage for absent staff.
- Open and close the store in accordance with established security procedures.
- Sell gas, cigarettes, and convenience merchandise, including hot and cold beverages.
- Process payments by cash, debit, and credit card, making proper change as required.
- Operate the Point of Sale (POS) system and credit card terminal.
- Request valid status cards and follow proper procedures when selling tax-exempt gas, cigarettes, or other non-taxed products.
- Verify that status purchasers have not exceeded their personal maximum allowance.
- Perform regular cash drops and complete accompanying documentation as authorized.
- Ensure safety, security, and health procedures are met every shift.
- Ensure the retail store and customer areas are kept clean and organized at all times.
Customer Service
- Model and promote a high standard of customer service across all staff interactions.
- Be helpful and welcoming to fellow employees, Squamish Nation members, and the public.
- Go the extra mile to resolve customer issues professionally.
- Present a consistently skilled image of Nch'ḵay̓ in all interactions and communications.
- Perform other customer service tasks as directed by the Store Manager or Manager, Retail Operations.
Marketing, Pricing, Inventory and Purchasing
- Assist the Store Manager in developing and maintaining an inventory monitoring and control system.
- Maintain inventory turnover targets.
- Order fuel and products as needed or as directed by the Store Manager or Manager, Retail Operations.
- Submit purchase orders to vendors for cigarettes and other products.
- Rotate stock properly and close out obsolete items.
- Ensure all merchandise is properly priced.
- Supervise the check-in of all gas and cigarette shipments for accuracy against delivery tickets (quantity, price, and quality).
- Resolve discrepancies in daily inventory report forms within two (2) hours.
- Maintain inventory levels to minimize delivery delays while meeting inventory turn goals.
- Maintain fresh and appealing merchandise displays in accordance with planograms and store policy.
- Ensure year-end inventory is counted accurately and efficiently.
Workplace Health and Safety
- Ensure the health and safety of all employees and workers under your supervision.
- Provide orientation and safety training to new and existing workers and monitor their progress.
- Ensure workers are aware of all known or reasonably foreseeable health and safety hazards in the workplace.
- Ensure appropriate personal protective equipment is available, worn when required, and maintained.
- Investigate unsafe conditions and ensure corrective action is taken without delay.
- Consult and cooperate with the Nch'ḵay̓ Workplace Safety Committee and others carrying out health and safety duties.
- Enforce Nch'ḵay̓ workplace health and safety policies, safe work practices, and procedures.
- Keep the work area organized and free of hazards.
- Report all unsafe conditions to the supervisor immediately.
- Report all injuries promptly to the supervisor or First Aid Attendant and obtain required medical attention.
- Cooperate in all accident investigations.
- Report to work free from the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Wear required personal protective equipment and ensure it is in good condition.
- Report immediately to the supervisor if uncertain how to perform any task safely.
Tobacco Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all tobacco retail regulations, including age verification requirements, display restrictions, and applicable provincial and federal requirements.
- Ensure all staff are trained on tobacco compliance procedures and that those procedures are consistently followed.
Team and Operational Support
- Promote and communicate store-level priorities that support Nch'ḵay̓'s initiatives.
- Perform data entry, reconciliations,
POS back-office maintenance, and related paperwork.
- Work with the management team to meet budgets and maximize profitability by monitoring labor, inventory, and overhead.
- Oversee merchandise stocking and ensure shelves are maintained.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance direction to Retail Customer Service staff.
- Assist the Store Manager with building and property maintenance as required.
Reporting
- Reports to the Store Manager, Squamish Valley Gas Bar.
Other Duties
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
- Secondary school diploma required.
- Certificate in Customer Service, Retail Management, or Business Administration from a recognized post-secondary institution is preferred.
- As the role develops, the incumbent will be expected to complete job-required training and short-term courses in areas such as WHMIS, merchandising, First Aid, staff supervision, and workplace safety.
Experience
- 2–3 years of closely related experience in retail, customer service, or a supervisory role, including areas such as open/close procedures, cash handling, inventory, building maintenance, and computer entry.
- Experience working in a First Nations community environment is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong customer service skills and a professional, helpful demeanor.
- Ability to supervise and support staff, and to step into a lead role when the Store Manager is absent.
- Working knowledge of workplace health and safety regulations, including WHMIS.
- Knowledge of tobacco retail compliance, including age verification requirements and applicable provincial regulations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and point-of-sale systems.
- Experience with large-scale computerized database or inventory systems is an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and stay calm under pressure.
- Cultural awareness and ability to work respectfully within a First Nations enterprise environment.
Other Requirements
- Valid driver's license (Class 5 preferred; Class 7N may be considered).
- Must be flexible with scheduling, including evenings and weekends.
- Ability to perform retail work including prolonged standing and lifting.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
