Our client is a well-established small-to-mid-sized mechanical company looking to add a Controller to their team. This is a hands-on opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys working closely with ownership and management and taking responsibility for the financial operations of multiple companies.
The role would suit someone with strong construction/job-costing accounting experience who is comfortable working independently, managing multiple priorities, and providing accurate financial information to support business decisions. You’ll have exposure across full-cycle accounting, payroll, compliance, budgeting, forecasting and cash management, while also providing guidance to a small accounting and administrative team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee full-cycle accounting, job costing and payroll for Canadian and U.S. entities.
- Prepare year-end working papers and coordinate with external accountants, auditors, tax advisors and banking partners.
- Review payroll for accuracy and compliance across BC and Alberta, and respond to CRA, IRS, WCB and other regulatory requests.
- Support management with budgeting, forecasting, cash management and financial reporting,
ensuring the integrity of accounting information.
- Mentor and provide guidance to accounting and administrative support staff while helping manage day-to-day accounting priorities.
- Maintain and reconcile key financial records, including leases, corporate credit cards and other accounting schedules, and troubleshoot accounting software/user issues.
The Ideal Candidate:
- 5+ years of experience in construction accounting, job costing or a related project-based environment.
- Post-secondary education in Accounting; CPA designation or progress toward CPA is preferred.
- Strong proficiency with Excel, Word and Outlook, with experience using construction accounting software such as Sage 100 Contractor considered an asset.
- Detail-oriented and highly organized, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong judgment and discretion when handling confidential financial, payroll and employee information.
- A team-oriented and practical communicator who is comfortable working directly with management and supporting a small team.
