About The Role The Lead Data Engineer is a senior individual contributor within McKesson's Decision Intelligence organization, responsible for leading the design, delivery, and operationalization of scalable data engineering and analytics solutions across the PSaS Business Unit. This role combines deep hands-on engineering expertise with solution leadership, mentorship, and cross-functional influence. The successful candidate will serve as a technical leader, guiding complex data initiatives, establishing best practices, and ensuring the delivery of reliable, high-quality data products that support advanced analytics and machine learning use cases.
In this role, you will lead end-to-end technical delivery for complex data engineering projects, collaborate with cross-functional teams including data scientists, analysts, and product managers, and influence architectural decisions. You will also mentor junior engineers, uphold engineering standards, and drive automation and reusability across data solutions. Your work will directly impact McKesson's ability to leverage data for strategic insights, operational efficiency, and cutting-edge healthcare solutions.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess recognized expertise in data engineering and analytics within large enterprise environments.
You should have a strong ability to independently lead complex technical initiatives with minimal oversight and influence the technical direction of projects. Proven experience mentoring other engineers, designing scalable data architectures, and working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders is essential.
A deep understanding of data architecture, ETL/ELT processes, and large-scale data processing is required. You should also have excellent stakeholder communication and collaboration skills to effectively translate business needs into technical solutions.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end technical delivery for complex data engineering initiatives or domains, ensuring alignment with business objectives and technical standards.
- Serve as a senior technical point of contact within cross-functional squads, providing guidance and expertise on data engineering best practices.
- Design and build scalable, reliable batch and real-time data pipelines across internal and external systems, ensuring data quality and operational stability.
- Collaborate with Data Architects and enterprise teams to influence and define architectural decisions and data strategies.
- Establish and enforce engineering standards, patterns, and best practices aligned with enterprise data strategy and compliance requirements.
- Mentor and guide data engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and technical coaching to foster a high-performing engineering team.
- Ensure the quality, reliability, and performance of data products, proactively identifying and remediating technical debt.
- Partner with product managers,
data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders to translate analytical requirements into scalable, efficient solutions.
- Promote an automation-first mindset, focusing on reusability, maintainability, and efficiency in data engineering solutions.
- Oversee testing strategies, production readiness, observability, and operational stability of data pipelines to ensure continuous delivery and uptime.
- Support advanced analytics and machine learning initiatives by developing optimized data models and pipelines.
- Communicate complex technical designs, tradeoffs, risks, and outcomes clearly to stakeholders at various levels.
