The Opportunity
Working closely with business leaders and colleagues across the organization, we are seeking a Director, Surety Solutions to help drive the profitable growth and ongoing success of our surety business in Ontario and Atlantic Canada.
This role will play a critical leadership position within our Surety team, balancing strategic broker engagement, portfolio management, underwriting expertise, and people leadership. You will help shape regional growth strategies, strengthen broker partnerships, and contribute to the continued development of our national surety platform.

What You Will Be Doing
Strategy, Broker Management & Business Development
- Partner with Surety leadership to support the development and execution of regional business strategies aligned with national surety objectives.
- Lead business development efforts across Ontario and Atlantic Canada to drive profitable growth and expand market presence.
- Build, maintain, and strengthen relationships with key broker partners and industry stakeholders.
- Collaborate with underwriting and leadership teams to implement broker strategies that support business goals.
- Monitor market trends, competitive activity, and emerging risks to identify opportunities and improve business performance.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, business planning, and performance management activities.
- Promote the Tokio Marine Canada brand through broker engagement, industry involvement, and market visibility.
- Participate in broker meetings, industry conferences, and networking events across the region.
- Travel as required to support business development and relationship management activities.
Underwriting & Portfolio Management
- Underwrite and manage a portfolio of contract and commercial surety accounts while maintaining profitability and underwriting discipline.
- Evaluate new opportunities by analyzing financial statements, work programs, capacity, collateral, indemnity structures, and overall risk profiles.
- Review and approve surety submissions within delegated authority levels and provide recommendations on larger or more complex opportunities.
- Monitor portfolio performance and implement strategies to optimize profitability and account retention.
- Work collaboratively with underwriting colleagues across Canada to ensure consistency in risk selection and underwriting practices.
- Support the ongoing enhancement of underwriting processes, systems, and operational efficiencies.
- Partner with Claims, Legal, Finance, and other business units when required to support business objectives and account management.
- Assist with national underwriting initiatives and special projects as needed.
Leadership & Team Development
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing culture built on teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Provide coaching, mentorship, and technical support to underwriters and support staff.
- Support employee development through training, performance feedback, and career growth opportunities.
- Assist in talent acquisition, onboarding, succession planning, and performance management activities.
- Encourage knowledge sharing and collaboration across the national Surety team.
Who You Are
You are an experienced surety professional with strong underwriting expertise, business development capabilities, and leadership skills. You thrive in a collaborative environment and enjoy building relationships with brokers, clients, and colleagues.
You are a proactive and solutions-oriented professional who can balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution. You are comfortable working in a growing organization where flexibility, adaptability, and teamwork are essential to success.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 7-10 years of surety underwriting experience with demonstrated success managing broker relationships and complex accounts.
- Previous leadership, mentoring, or team development experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of contract surety, commercial surety, financial statement analysis, and risk assessment.
- Proven ability to develop business, build broker partnerships, and identify growth opportunities.
- Strong financial acumen and the ability to analyze data to support decision-making.
- Excellent relationship management, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams.
- Innovative mindset with the ability to identify and implement practical solutions.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
- Robust customer service orientation and commitment to delivering exceptional results.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook).
- Bilingual (English/French) is considered an asset but is not required.

The anticipated base salary range for this position is (130,000-150,000).
Compensation may vary for roles in other regions to reflect local market conditions and currency differences. At Tokio Marine Canada, our salary ranges are designed to reflect the skills, experience, and responsibilities required for each role while providing room for growth. For experienced professionals, offers are typically positioned near the midpoint of the range. The upper end of the range is reserved for individuals who consistently deliver exceptional performance and impact.
Candidates who are newer to the role may start below the midpoint, with opportunities to progress as they develop. Final offer decisions take into account factors such as location, relevant experience, and individual skill set.

We work in a hybrid model, and you should expect to split your time between working in the office and working remotely, with flexibility based on the role and the business needs. We currently have an office in downtown Toronto and will eventually be establishing offices in other provinces. Should you currently work in a province where we do not have an office, you will remain remote until such time as we do establish an office.
