About the Role

We are hiring an Electrical Systems Designer to design, improve and validate the electrical and controls hardware used in AXYZ CNC machinery.

This is a hands-on engineering role responsible for developing electrical schematics, control-panel layouts, wiring documentation, cable schedules, bills of materials and component specifications. You will work directly with control panels and prototype machines to ensure electrical designs can be manufactured, tested, commissioned and supported effectively.

You will collaborate closely with mechanical, controls, software, manufacturing, purchasing and service teams. The primary focus is electrical hardware design and validation, with PLC and motion-control knowledge used to support machine integration.

The successful candidate will combine strong electrical design capability with practical experience building, testing and troubleshooting industrial machinery or automation equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Electrical Design and Documentation

- Create and maintain electrical schematics, control-panel layouts, wiring diagrams, cable schedules and bills of materials
- Coordinate machine inputs, outputs and control interfaces with the controls and software teams
- Specify motors, drives, variable frequency drives, sensors, transformers, power supplies, electrical protection devices and machine-safety devices
- Ensure components and systems are appropriately selected for machine performance, electrical load, environmental conditions and applicable requirements
- Design electrical systems for reliability, manufacturability, service access, component availability and cost
- Maintain accurate revision control and a clear history of electrical design changes
- Review drawings and documentation for completeness and accuracy before release
- Interpret mechanical drawings and coordinate equipment mounting, cable routing and physical clearances with mechanical designers

Controller and Machine Integration

- Support electrical hardware integration with AXYZ’s existing A2MC motion-control platform using step-and-direction signals and Modbus
- Contribute electrical requirements, integration support and validation for the next controller platform using EtherCAT
- Integrate servo systems, spindles, knife tooling, sensors, pneumatic inputs and outputs and related machine hardware
- Configure and troubleshoot machine inputs, outputs and communication interfaces
- Work with controls and software team members to verify that electrical hardware and control logic operate together as intended
- Support the electrical integration of new machine features, components and product improvements

Prototype Testing and Troubleshooting

- Build, wire, inspect and test prototype electrical systems in accordance with established safety procedures
- Support the commissioning and validation of prototype machines and recent electrical designs

- Develop and execute electrical and motion-system test procedures
- Use diagnostic tools and electrical test equipment to identify wiring, component, communication and system faults
- Document test results, identified issues, root causes and corrective actions
- Resolve issues discovered during development, testing and commissioning
- Confirm that corrective actions address the complete issue without introducing new risks or failures

Electrical and Machine Safety

- Support electrical and machine-safety risk assessments
- Design and verify safety circuits, emergency stops, interlocks and guarding interfaces
- Ensure electrical designs and documentation comply with applicable machine electrical and safety requirements
- Apply relevant CSA requirements, NFPA 79, UL 508A and other applicable standards
- Identify electrical safety risks and recommend appropriate corrective actions
- Maintain safe practices when working with energized systems, electrical panels and prototype machinery

Production and Field Support

- Transfer validated electrical designs and documentation to Manufacturing Engineering
- Support initial production builds and resolve electrical issues identified during assembly
- Work with production to resolve drawing, wiring, component and installation questions
- Partner with purchasing and suppliers to address component availability, quality, cost and lead-time concerns
- Evaluate and document suitable alternative components when original components are unavailable
- Investigate field failures in collaboration with service, controls and other engineering team members
- Incorporate field learning and corrective actions into released electrical designs and documentation
- Provide clear technical guidance to production, service, purchasing and suppliers

Education

- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related electrical engineering discipline
- Equivalent combinations of relevant education and directly related experience may be considered
