TerraWave · Winnipeg, MB · Full-time · On-site
This is an on-site role at our Winnipeg office, five days a week. It is not remote or hybrid. Candidates must already live in Winnipeg or be willing to relocate here before their start date.
About the role
TerraWave builds agricultural IoT hardware that helps farmers monitor conditions on their operations, from stored grain to field weather. Our devices run on a shared in-house firmware platform and are deployed on farms across the region.
We're looking for someone at the intermediate level to join the team and take real ownership of parts of that platform. It's a hands-on role that spans code, hardware, and everything in between.
You'll report to Hamid Bagherli.
What you'll do
Our devices sit outdoors on farms, run on battery and solar, and talk to the cloud over cellular. The firmware already exists and runs in the field. You'll maintain it, extend it, and keep it reliable.
Much of the work sits close to the sensors. Bringing new ones online, sampling them at the right rate, and calibrating them so the numbers hold up. Growers make real decisions on this data, so accuracy matters as much as uptime. Power is the other constant, since every milliamp buys more time in the field.
You'll assemble units, set up benches, and test properly before anything reaches a customer. Once deployed, you'll watch the fleet, chase down what customers and the field team report, and feed it back into the next revision.
We also want someone who keeps asking what could be better. New sensors, different components, smarter ways to stretch a battery.
What we're looking for
- 3+ years of professional firmware development experience
- Based in Winnipeg,
or willing to relocate before your start date. The role requires you on site with the hardware, so this one is not negotiable
- Strong C and C++
- Hands-on experience developing firmware for 32-bit microcontrollers on a real-time operating system
- Solid understanding of the common serial and sensor interfaces used to talk to hardware, and the ability to debug them when they misbehave
- Experience integrating sensors end to end, including sampling strategy, calibration, and validating readings against a known reference
- Experience connecting embedded devices to the cloud, including messaging protocols and a major cloud IoT platform
- Comfortable with the physical side of the job. Assembling and wiring devices, setting up your own test rigs, and using standard lab equipment to work out what the hardware is doing
- Curious and self-directed. We want someone who keeps looking for ways to make the product better, not only someone who works the ticket in front of them
- Experience supporting deployed devices and working through customer or field-reported issues
- Comfortable in an agile team using Jira and Confluence, and willing to write things down
- Transparent communicator. You'll work with hardware, cloud, and field teams, not just other firmware developers
- Able to travel to farm sites occasionally.
Most people do this with their own vehicle, and mileage is reimbursed
Nice to have
- Low-power design experience, including sleep modes and battery or solar powered systems
- Wireless connectivity experience, whether cellular (LTE) or short-range and long-range radio protocols (LoRa, Bluetooth). We work with both
- Over-the-air firmware update systems
- PCB schematic and layout experience (KiCad or similar)
- Python for test tooling and automation
- Exposure to hardware safety or hazardous location certification (CSA, HAZLOC)
- Background in agriculture, outdoor, or ruggedized hardware
Why join us
- A growing team where your work ships rapid and runs on real hardware in real fields
- Genuine ownership. You'll shape technical decisions on the platform, not just close tickets
- A clear path to grow. The team is expanding, and there's real room to move into senior and lead work
- Broad exposure across firmware, hardware, and cloud, with room to go deep where you want to
- Health and dental insurance
- Generous time off
- Fast-paced startup environment building technology that supports food production
