Kinesiology / Strength & Conditioning Coach – Mentorship & Development
Performance Institute | Burnaby, BC
Performance Institute is a progressive, sport-specific, personal training, and active rehabilitation facility located in Burnaby, BC. We work with a broad range of clientele, from general fitness enthusiasts and active rehabilitation clients to some of Canada’s top athletes, as well as actors and other public figures.
Training at Performance Institute includes personal training, semi-private small-group training, active rehabilitation, and team training. Past and current clientele highlights include the Vancouver Whitecaps, national-level wheelchair athletes, some of Canada’s elite figure skaters, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Peet, David Duchovny, and Zac Efron.
Our Strength & Conditioning Trainers work in a highly engaging, collaborative environment where coaches are expected to continually learn, develop their skills, and support one another.
About the Role
We are looking for a proactive, personable, reliable and highly motivated Junior Kinesiologist / Strength & Conditioning Trainer who is looking to gain hands-on industry experience with the long-term goal of progressing into a full member of our coaching staff.
This is a mentorship and development position, not simply a part-time gym job. The successful candidate will initially work alongside our experienced coaches, learning the Performance Institute approach to assessment, exercise selection, coaching, program progression, and client experience. As competency and confidence develop, the successful candidate will gradually take on greater independence.
The ideal candidate is a morning person, enjoys working with people, is passionate about strength and conditioning, general fitness, injury rehabilitation and sport-specific training, and is genuinely interested in pursuing a career in coaching.
We are particularly interested in candidates who are currently completing a post-secondary degree in Kinesiology or a related field, or who have relevant education, certifications and coaching experience.
This role is ideal for someone who:
- Is highly coachable and genuinely enjoys learning
- Takes initiative and looks for ways to contribute
- Is dependable and follows through on commitments
- Is comfortable asking questions and receiving feedback
- Has strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Enjoys working with a wide variety of people, not just athletes
- Wants to build a long-term career in strength & conditioning, kinesiology or personal training
- Can commit to developing with Performance Institute over the longer term
Because this position involves a significant investment in mentorship and career development, the successful applicant must be able to commit to a minimum one-year term. For candidates currently completing their degree, a longer-term commitment of approximately two years is strongly preferred.
Schedule & Hours
Most Likely Regular shifts:
- Tuesday: 5:40 am – 9:30 am
- Thursday: 5:40 am – 9:30 am
We are also looking for someone who has the flexibility and willingness to occasionally provide additional early-morning coverage for trainer vacation, illness, or other staffing needs. Additional shifts may also become available as the candidate progresses.
Reliability and punctuality are particularly important for this role.
Development Pathway
Your progression will be based on demonstrated competency, confidence, and readiness rather than simply time in the position.
Initial Development — Shadowing & Assistant Coaching
Initially, you will:
- Shadow a variety of Performance Institute training sessions
- Learn how our coaches assess, coach and communicate with clients
- Progress into an assistant role working alongside senior training staff
- Become familiar with Performance Institute strength & conditioning protocols and program templates in TrueCoach

- Learn to interpret, record and communicate session details in TrueCoach

This may include
- Coaching 2–3 clients at a time in our semi-private training environment
- Prescribing and coaching exercises using established Performance Institute protocols
- Adapting exercises and programs appropriately to individual client needs
- Providing effective coaching cues, regressions and progressions
- Working independently when senior trainers are booked or away on RTO
- Taking on occasional additional shifts, including weekend hours, as available
- Continuing to develop your coaching skills through ongoing mentorship and feedback
The longer-term goal is for the successful candidate to progress toward working with 3–5 clients at a time in our small-group semi-private training sessions, as well as potentially personal training, active rehabilitation and team training.
