The Position

We are currently looking for a Life Skills Counselor to join our Emmanuel House team. You will support and enhance the independent and healthy living skills of the residents of Emmanuel House in order to prepare them for successful community integration. Under the direction of the Program Manager, you would support the counselling staff and residents offering help to people experiencing difficulties with addictions, mental health and involvement in the justice system.

What You’ll Do

- Orienting new residents to the house, including the review of house guidelines and expectations.
- Assisting residents with required paperwork and applications.
- Maintaining and recording information pertaining to residents in proper staff logs, databases and resident files.
- Planning and facilitating groups with residents.
- Facilitating recreational and social activities that support participants with healthy living plans, including being active in the community.
- Assisting participants with everyday living tasks such as household cleaning, preparation of event meal for all residents, laundry and attending to outside appointments.
- Providing emotional support to residents as needed, including conflict resolution and crisis intervention.
- Assisting residents who are getting ready to move on with finding suitable accommodations and with moving into their new homes once the program is completed.
- Attending regular bi-weekly staff meetings.




- Shopping for household groceries and other supplies.

What You’ll Bring

- Diploma/Degree in the Human Services or a related field. Equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.
- Valid First Aid Certificate and ASIST training is required.
- Experience in cooking.
- Experience working with mental health and addiction issues in a residential setting.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license to become insured on the company vehicle.
- Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
- Enhanced Reliability Status with Public Services and Procurement Canada is required.

The Details

This is a relief position, on call and requires shift work including days, evenings, nights and weekends. The hourly rate for this position is $21.41 - $23.52.
