NETwork and Infrastructure Services manages UBCNET, the university’s network infrastructure supporting teaching, learning and administrative activities across the Point Grey campus and remote locations.
This Team is responsible for supporting and growing the University’s large and complex Core Enterprise Data Network. UBC’s data network is highly virtualized and one of the largest in North America with multiple core hub sites, data centres, routers, DNS servers, firewalls, etc. UBC has over 100,000 hardwired data ports, 2,000 network switches, 700 IT Communication Rooms, 6 major IT Hub Sites, 500km of underground interlinking fiber optic data cabling, 10,000 wireless access points, 90,000 concurrent connected wireless devices, 2,000 Virtual Local Area Networks, and 1,100 campus Virtual Routers.
All of this spans 400 academic buildings, multiple campus locations, BC Teaching Hospitals, and other satellite sites across the British Columbia.
The Network Management
Centre (NMC) is responsible for planning, design, engineering, analysis, configuration, implementation, support and troubleshooting in the areas such as LAN/WAN, campus, data centre networks and network security. The NMC also supports specialized service including such as VOIP, wireless, video and multimedia.
The Network
Analyst I consults with users to analyze user requirements for information network systems and assess capacity requirements and monitor network performance. This position provides second level technical, operational, and administrative support for all aspects of UBC’s Enterprise Core network and systems.
Responsibilities align with UBC IT’s goals and objectives, supporting the University’s overall mission and customer business needs. Reporting to the Manager, Network Infrastructure Services, the Network Analyst I is a member of the NMC team providing support for UBCNET and other related Data Network service offerings. This position involves close collaboration with other UBC IT teams, academic and administrative clients, vendors and industry peers to support enterprise network services.
Ensure the operational stability of the campus network by providing implementation, monitoring, and support functions in the following areas: routing and switching, network security, support systems (such as DNS/DHCP, packet shapers, analysis modules), and network management systems.
Fulfill service requests and resolve incidents relating to switching, routing, network security, firewall policies, support systems. Resolves operational problems through detailed analysis of statistics, packet captures, logs with support from team members as necessary; Provide network security operations support including installing, configuring, managing firewalls, VPNs and related network security devices and applications for the UBC network.
Creates and maintains scripts and programs used to automate network operations. Takes initiative to remedy deficiencies, notice where efficiencies can be gained, and recommend enhancements for optimum performance in network operations, infrastructure, and workflows. Compiles detailed documentation and quality reports for operations and projects.
Provides business and after hours on-call support on a rotational basis and is available off-hours to work on emergency network problems, maintenance, and project activities. Consults with users to determine the required technical support for network systems including monitoring network activity, and troubleshooting and diagnosing network problems. Monitors facilities capacity requirements, schedules requests for bandwidth and adjusts bandwidth on a daily or weekly basis.
Assesses network performance to ensure that it meets the present and future needs of the enterprise. Assists in the development of disaster recovery plans and executes network test plans. Analyses user requirements, prepares equipment specifications, and installs and configures or reconfigures network components.
Implements network security procedures and predetermined software or hardware changes to rectify any security issues. Contributes to the development of best practices, standards, procedures and quality objectives across systems infrastructure or platforms. Maintains appropriate qualified designations and up-to-date knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools.
This role directly impacts availability, reliability, and security of UBCNET which supports academic, research, and administrative computing. Decisions and actions affect faculties, departments and administrative units across the University. Recommendations and actions regarding network architecture impacts the future direction, stability, security, and sustainment of UBC’s network services.
A high level of attention to detail and maintaining broad knowledge of network operations are essential.
Supervision Received
Reports to the Manager,
Network Infrastructure Services Works. Receives administrative, broad technical and strategic direction from the Manager, as well as strategic technical direction from the Network Architect. May work independently or collaboratively with other team members, clients, IT staff in leading or supporting roles on projects and operational activities.

No direct supervision given. Coordinates projects and activities as required. Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or other related discipline. CCNA or other similar advanced technical certification in routing, switching, or network security. Relevant experience supporting enterprise LAN/WAN, large campus networks, network operations, network security and network management or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to multitask balancing multiple streams of work, prioritizes workload based on management direction, and works under pressure to resolve challenges and meet project deadlines.
Network Security: various firewall technologies, firewall policy management, VPN technologies. Network monitoring, management, analysis and orchestration systems.
Support Systems: DNS, DHCP, Windows, MAC, UNIX, XML. Python, Perl, or Shell.
Routing and Switching: BGP, BGP/MPLS, policy routing, redistribution, multicast; Network Security: various firewall technologies, AAA, ACLs, device hardening, IDS/IPS, port scanning, vACLs, best practices.
Data Centre: Network Technologies. Problem resolution of issues through packet capture and analysis and other tools. Software-defined network. Cisco certifications is an asset. Ensures that the limited time available for collaboration adds significant customer value and business results.
Communication for Results - Converses with, and writes to, peers in ways that support transactional and administrative activities. Explains the immediate context of the situation, asks questions with follow‑ups, and solicits advice prior to taking action. Solicits input in gathering data that help identify and differentiate the symptoms and root causes of defined problems.

Knowledge - Possesses a basic understanding of the strategy, structures, processes, and procedures of the enterprise in its relationship with the business and its activities. Troubleshoots in response to requests for technical support. Escalates problems to appropriate technical experts.
