The Position

The Night Counselor provides counselling and support services during nights, overnights and weekends to the residents within our residential and day treatment centre. You will have considerable responsibility and autonomy for making decisions regarding the residents’ needs.

What You’ll Do

- Assists Social Workers with delivery of counselling services to residents which may involve dealing with substance abuse management, emotions management, crisis management and other essential life skills.
- Co-facilitates counselling groups for the residents as required.
- Reviews admission applications and correctional records and makes recommendations to the Admissions Committee.
- Provides supportive counselling in areas of interpersonal conflicts, suicidal threats, anxiety or panic attacks and other emergency or crisis. This counselling can be in person with participants residing in Emmanuel House or with former residents via phone.
- Determines if there is a need for immediate intervention or referral to outside sources such as emergency shelters.
- Provides after hours support and information to participants and staff of other Stella’s Circle programs.
- Advises Correctional Services of Canada when parole clients violate conditions of release.
- Completes and documents regular room checks and building security checks to ensure safety of residents.
- Completes a log and file review at the beginning of each shift to assess the potential needs of residents.
- Completes a log and file summary at the end of each shift and updates the database.
- Assist with residents accessing prescribed medications and recording same as needed.
- Assists residents with daily living skills, such as meal preparation, room clean-up or laundry.




- Acts as an integral part of the staff team by attending bi-weekly meetings and by participating in any relevant staff development opportunities or Stella’s Circle committees.
- Assists with orientation of new staff through review of policies and procedures during training shifts.

What You’ll Bring

- University degree with major course work in the Social Sciences field such as Social Work, Psychology or Sociology is required.
- Training in ASIST and First Aid/CPR Certification is required.
- Experience with providing support to individuals and groups, especially in the areas of mental health, trauma, corrections, addictions and marginalized populations.
- Strong interpersonal skills while being able to work independently.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and to prioritize work.
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work under deadlines with frequent interruptions.
- Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
- Enhanced Reliability Status Clearance is required.

The Details

This is a relief, on-call position. This position will require evening, overnight and weekend shift work. The hourly rate for this position is $27.00 - $29.22.
