Muddy Boot Prints is a fully outdoor, unlicensed early learning program for children ages 2.5 - 5, inspired by forest school philosophy and operating rain or shine in East Vancouver's parks. We are entering our 10th year of operation in East Vancouver.

The Role

We are looking for casual/on-call Outdoor Educators to provide occasional coverage alongside our regular Educators in cases of illness or other absences.

This is a hands-on role for someone who is curious about inquiry-based outdoor learning and comfortable being outside in all weather. This is a casual, on-call independent contractor position paid at $25–$29/hour, depending on experience and qualifications. One paid 4-hour training shift at $23/hour is required before joining the active substitute roster. There are no guaranteed hours.

Responsibilities Include

- Actively scan and supervise the group and maintain accurate child counts.
- Support children's outdoor play, movement, exploration, and inquiries.
- Work alongside the Lead Educator using positive, respectful guidance strategies.
- Actively support transitions between activities and sites.
- Help maintain a protected, welcoming, and inclusive environment.
- Communicate observations or concerns with the Lead Educator.
- Follow Muddy Boot Prints policies, procedures, and community agreements.

Schedule & Locations Monday–Thursday, 8:45 a.m.–12:45 p.m. Classes rotate biweekly between Trout Lake Park, Renfrew Ravine, Strathcona Community Gardens, and Clark Park.

Shifts are offered based on program needs and educator availability.

Qualifications





- ECE Certificate or currently working toward ECE certification
- Current First Aid certification
- Warm, attentive, reliable, and genuinely enjoys working with young children
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather
- Active and willing to participate physically in children's play and exploration
- Observant and able to track the whole group
- Respectful of children's autonomy and individual ways of communicating and participating
- Interest in outdoor learning and forest school philosophy

Physical Requirements This is an active outdoor position. Educators must be able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs., walk up to 2 km on uneven terrain, and bend, squat, kneel, and be able to respond to children quickly.

Qualifications

Basic ECE

Required Experience

- First Aid certification
- Valid criminal record check
- At least one year of experience working with young children
- An ability to articulate a personal philosophy of early learning and outdoor play
- ECE certificate, or working towards one
- ECEA will be considered

Salary & Benefits: $25-$29/hr Depending on Experience A 4 hour training shift paid at $23/hr is required before joining the active roster
