Ferncove is a small, warm family daycare and preschool in Langford where children are given the time, space and support to become confident, capable little people.

I am looking for a kind, thoughtful and dependable Preschool Assistant to join me in creating a calm, engaging environment for young children.

Our program is inspired by Montessori, particularly in our approach to independence, practical life, grace and courtesy, purposeful activities and a carefully prepared environment. At the same time, we are not a strictly traditional Montessori program. I also value inquiry, creativity, experimentation, outdoor exploration and following children's interests.

You don't need to be Montessori trained. What matters most to me is that you understand and appreciate the spirit behind Montessori and are excited to learn and grow within our approach.

What you'll be doing

As an assistant, you will help me:

- Create and maintain a beautiful, orderly and inviting prepared environment
- Support children's independence and self-help skills
- Model and encourage grace, courtesy and respectful interactions
- Present and support age-appropriate activities
- Follow children's interests and encourage curiosity and investigation
- Support open-ended art, sensory, practical life and exploratory activities
- Spend time outdoors with the children and encourage nature-based exploration
- Read stories, sing songs and participate in group activities
- Help children navigate social situations and develop problem-solving skills
- Observe children and respond thoughtfully to their individual needs
- Help keep the classroom and outdoor environment clean, organized and ready for the children
- Work collaboratively with me to provide a consistent, nurturing experience for every child

The person I'm looking for The most important qualification is how you relate to children. I'm looking for someone who is:

- Warm, patient and genuinely enjoys young children
- Calm and gentle, without being passive




- Respectful of children while still able to maintain appropriate boundaries
- Observant and thoughtful rather than quick to intervene
- Comfortable allowing children to try, experiment and make mistakes
- Encouraging of independence rather than doing things for children unnecessarily
- Creative and curious
- Reliable, responsible and punctual
- Comfortable working as part of a small team
- Open to learning and receiving feedback
- Comfortable with both Montessori-inspired activities and more open-ended, inquiry-based experiences

Montessori experience Montessori experience is an asset, but formal Montessori training is not required.

Perhaps you've worked in a Montessori classroom. Perhaps you've worked in a daycare or preschool that incorporated Montessori principles. Or perhaps you've simply found that Montessori's emphasis on independence, respect and purposeful activity resonates with you.

I'm especially interested in someone who understands that there isn't always one "right" way to approach a child or an activity. I want someone who can appreciate a prepared environment while also being willing to follow a child's curiosity and see where their questions lead.

Qualifications

- ECE, ECEA or relevant childcare experience preferred
- Montessori experience is an asset
- Current First Aid/CPR certification, or willingness to obtain it
- Clear criminal record check as required for childcare employment
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to meet all applicable BC childcare licensing requirements

Hours This is a part-time position of approximately 5-15 hours per week.

The schedule will generally be during weekday daytime hours. There may be some flexibility in scheduling for the right person.

This position may be particularly well suited to an ECE/ECEA student, someone looking for a second part-time position, or an experienced early childhood professional who prefers a smaller program and fewer hours.

Pay: $20.00-$22.00 per hour

Expected hours: 5.0 – 15.0 per week
