The role requires close collaboration with engineers, designers, and construction teams to provide reliable survey data essential to safe and efficient tunneling operations.

The Surveyor’s key responsibilities are:

- Conduct detailed surface and underground surveys for tunnels, shafts, portals, cross passages, and associated railway infrastructure
- Establish, maintain, and verify survey control networks, including transfer of alignment and levels from surface to underground
- Set out and check tunnel works including:
- Tunnel centerlines and profiles
- Excavation limits and breakthrough control
- Tunnel linings, inverts, slabs, and track bed elements

- Use total stations, gyroscopic systems, laser scanners, GPS (where applicable), and other specialized survey instruments to collect accurate data
- Perform as-built surveys and dimensional checks of excavated and completed tunnel works
- Monitor and report on tunnel convergence, deformation, settlement, and clearance compliance
- Analyze survey data to prepare maps, drawings, models, and reports for engineering and construction purposes

- Identify potential underground constraints, geological interfaces, and construction risks that may impact alignment or excavation
