Lead testing, commissioning, startup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of complex protection and control systems
Serve as the lead field technician on major substation, utility, industrial, and renewable energy projects
Test advanced protection schemes, including line current differential, distance, bus differential, breaker failure, auto-reclosing, transfer trip, generator, and transformer protection
Direct outage planning, testing strategies, functional verification, and commissioning activities
Diagnose complex relay, SCADA, communications, automation, and control-system issues
Review relay settings, protection philosophies, schematics, and commissioning plans for technical accuracy
Lead root-cause investigations involving protection-system failures and recommend corrective actions
Act as the primary technical contact for customers, engineers, project managers, and field teams
Develop and improve testing procedures, technical standards, and field practices
Mentor and train technicians while promoting consistent safety, quality, and technical performance
Provide field leadership to support project schedules, customer expectations, and operational requirements
Support customer relationships and business-development activities by providing technical expertise
Requirements
Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Power and Controls, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, military training, and relevant industry experience
At least seven years of protection and control testing, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting experience
Advanced expertise with microprocessor-based relays, communications systems, and substation automation technologies
In-depth knowledge of utility and industrial protection-system design, operation, and commissioning
Experience leading major substation commissioning, outage, or maintenance projects
Demonstrated ability to independently diagnose and resolve complex technical issues
Proven technical leadership, mentoring, and customer-facing experience
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical reporting and presenting recommendations
Registration or eligibility for registration with ASTTBC (preferred)
NETA certification or equivalent advanced electrical testing experience (preferred)
Experience with SEL relays, AcSELerator QuickSet, SCADA, IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, or other substation automation technologies (preferred)
Current WHMIS, First Aid/CPR/AED, fall protection, confined-space, or other relevant safety training (preferred)
Knowledge of CSA Z462 or equivalent electrical safety standards (preferred)
Ability to travel throughout British Columbia and occasionally to other locations in Canada, including overnight or extended assignments
Availability to work overtime, evenings, weekends, or statutory holidays when required by outages and project schedules
Valid driver’s license and driving record that meet company and insurer requirements
Ability to work safely in substations, industrial facilities, construction environments, and outdoor conditions
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and perform the essential duties of the position,
with reasonable accommodation where required
Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, crouch, and lift or move equipment weighing up to 23 kilograms or 50 pounds
Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
Successful completion of applicable job-related screening, including verification of qualifications and employment history, reference checks, a driver’s abstract, and other legally permissible screening
Drug and alcohol testing may apply where legally permissible and reasonably required for a safety-sensitive position
