Water Operator Reporting To: Manager of Operations

Hours of work: Monday to Friday 7:30am-4pm (with rotational on call duties)
Job Description SUMMARY: Reporting directly to the Manager of Operations this position is responsible for performing the preventative, corrective and predictive maintenance activities for the Mill Bay Waterworks District’s water distribution and water treatment system.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS Level I Water Distribution Operator Certification classified by the EOCP, as a minimum, higher Levels of this ticket would be preferred.
Not required, but an asset would be a Level I Water Treatment Facility Operator Certification as classified by the EOCP (as a minimum).
Eligible to hold DRC for MBWD’s facility and system.
Knowledge and experience in technical, mechanical and environmental aspects of a water distribution and treatment system while following WorkSafeBC protocol.
Computer knowledge with SCADA software systems and Microsoft Office/Excel is an asset.
Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Participation in the on-call rotation
Assists in the operations of all pump stations, providing maintenance on equipment within the pump houses
Maintains Shawnigan Creek pump house
Records water system data and chlorine residuals
Disinfects the water system and conducts testing; filling chemical tanks, chlorine pumps; repairs and maintenance
Conducts hydrant flushing and servicing throughout the District boundaries; flow testing when required
Conducts fire hydrant and valve maintenance and repairs
Conducts chlorination of District’s wells and well maintenance when necessary
Conducts weekly and annual water sampling for testing, collects bacteriological samples weekly for VIHA
Performs water quality testing and assists with customer inquiries
Conducts water meter maintenance to include meter reading, repairs, replacement, recent installs and testing
Responsible for PRV maintenance, repairs and testing
Monitors reservoirs and well sites monthly and conducts building inspections
Responsible for SCADA control adjustments and reporting
Maintains detention ponds and conducts monthly inspections
Keeps current with knowledge of as-built drawings and modifications to drawings
Conducts yard maintenance of District’s owned or SLR properties
Adheres to District’s OHS program
Participates in monthly safety meetings (for in office and on-call staff)
Addresses all leaks and breaks in the District’s system and repair
Maintains operator certification
Conducts Water Treatment Plant testing, maintenance and repairs.
Conducts daily and weekly water quality sampling of Greensand Treatment Plant
Conducts water quality sampling in-house, on wells and from all reservoirs
Troubleshoots all aspects of the District’s water system and records all modifications and upgrades.
