Transfer Station Operations Manager Location: Sarnia, ON Reports To: General Manager Employment Type: Full-Time Bonus: 10% discretionary bonus We are seeking a Transfer Station Operations Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of our transfer station in Sarnia, Ontario. The successful candidate will lead a team of four employees, including one Scale Operator and three Operators, while ensuring the facility operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all applicable regulatory and company requirements. This is a hands-on operational leadership role suited to an experienced waste industry professional who can effectively balance team leadership, facility operations, safety, productivity, environmental compliance, and business growth.
The successful candidate will also contribute to the marketing and growth of Transco, helping identify opportunities to strengthen customer relationships and expand the business. Maintain a strong presence on the floor and in the yard, actively monitoring daily operations. Assist with equipment operation, scale activities, material movement, and other operational tasks as needed.
Monitor site workflow, incoming and outgoing material, and overall facility performance. Coordinate the movement, loading, unloading, and transfer of materials through the facility. Provide day-to-day leadership, direction, and support to the site team.
Monitor employee performance, productivity, attendance, and compliance with company policies. Address operational and performance issues promptly and escalate matters when appropriate. Compliance & Regulatory Responsibilities Ensure the transfer station operates in accordance with applicable provincial, municipal, environmental, health and safety, and company requirements.
Ensure waste materials are properly received, handled, stored, transferred, and documented. Monitor incoming materials and identify prohibited, unacceptable, or potentially hazardous materials. Ensure required site records, logs, inspections, manifests, and operational documentation are completed accurately and maintained.
Conduct required inspections and follow up on deficiencies.
Support regulatory inspections and audits as required. Identify environmental, safety, and compliance risks and take appropriate corrective action.
Ensure spills, environmental incidents, equipment incidents, and other operational events are reported and managed in accordance with company procedures. Promote and maintain a strong safety culture across the facility. Ensure employees follow company safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
Conduct site inspections and address hazards or unsafe conditions. Monitor the condition and operation of site equipment and identify maintenance requirements. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe facility.
Business
Growth & Marketing Support the ongoing growth and development of Transco's operations and customer base. Identify opportunities to improve service offerings, operational efficiency, and customer relationships. Collaborate with leadership and commercial teams on business development and growth initiatives.
Represent
Transco professionally with customers, vendors, transportation partners, and other external stakeholders. Develop and maintain strong relationships with key customers and industry partners. Complete daily operational reports, production records, inspection documentation, and other required paperwork.
Monitor site volumes, productivity, staffing, equipment utilization, and operational performance. Support budgeting, forecasting, and cost-control initiatives as required. Maintain accurate employee, equipment, and site records.
Communicate regularly with the General Manager regarding site performance, staffing, safety, compliance, growth opportunities, and operational concerns. Travel to U.S. landfills and other facilities, as required,
to support operations and maintain strong relationships with U.Ability to travel into the United States is preferred, particularly as Transco works with U.S. landfills and disposal facilities. 3–5+ years of progressive experience within the waste, environmental services, recycling, transfer station, landfill, or related industry. ~ Direct experience working in or managing a waste transfer station is strongly preferred. ~ Strong understanding of the operational, environmental, and compliance requirements associated with waste management facilities. ~ Ability to travel into the United States is preferred. ~ Ability to work outdoors and in a physically demanding industrial environment. The ideal candidate is a hands-on waste industry leader who understands transfer station operations, can lead a small team effectively, and is comfortable getting involved in the day-to-day work.
They should also have a commercial mindset, with the ability to identify opportunities to improve operations, build relationships, support marketing efforts, and contribute to the continued growth of Transco.
