Responsibilities
- Review architectural drawings, construction plans, specifications, and tender documents.
- Perform accurate quantity takeoffs for roofing, siding, exterior finishes, and concrete work.
- Prepare detailed estimates including materials, labour, equipment, waste, overhead, and profit.
- Estimate roofing systems including asphalt shingles, flat/torch-on roofing, insulation, flashing, and related accessories.
- Estimate exterior work including James Hardie, vinyl siding, metal cladding/panels, soffit, fascia, eavestrough, insulation, weather barriers, stucco/parging, and stone/brick veneer.
- Estimate concrete work including slabs, sidewalks, driveways, pads, curbs, foundations, and concrete repairs.
- Calculate square footage, linear footage, material quantities, and labour requirements from drawings and site measurements.
- Obtain and compare pricing from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Prepare professional quotations, bid packages, scopes of work, and unit-rate pricing.
- Attend site visits to verify measurements and existing conditions when required.
- Identify exclusions,
allowances, potential change orders, and project risks before submitting bids.
- Maintain updated material and labour pricing for Calgary and surrounding areas.
- Track submitted quotations and follow up with builders, general contractors, and clients.
- Work with project managers, supervisors, suppliers, and field crews after projects are awarded.
- Review project costs against estimates to improve future pricing accuracy.
- Maintain organized records of drawings, takeoffs, supplier quotes, estimates, and awarded contracts.
- Meet bid deadlines and ensure estimates are complete and accurate before submission.
- Proficiency with Excel, PDF/plan takeoff software, email, and estimating software is preferred.
Requirements
- Proven experience in construction estimating with a solid understanding of construction processes and terminology.
- Proficiency with Bluebeam for digital markup and document management.
- Strong negotiation skills to secure favorable pricing and contractual terms.
- Familiarity with HeavyBid or similar estimating software is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously within tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with team members and external partners.
- Construction experience across various project types is advantageous; a background in heavy civil or commercial projects is a plus.
