Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is one of the largest school divisions in Alberta, serving the education needs of approximately 17,750 students in 43 schools. EIPS is recruiting a permanent full-time Education Assistant at Brentwood Elementary.
Brentwood
Elementary serves approximately 425 students in kindergarten to Grade 6, with 21 teaching staff and 12 support staff. The school is located in Sherwood Park, AB. Three unique programs operate at Brentwood, including the Elementary program for kindergarten to Grade 6, the Logos Christian program for kindergarten to Grade 6 and the specialized Generating Occupational, Academic and Life Skills (GOALS) program for grades 1 to 6.
One special initiative that helps to build school unity is the Character Education program. ~ 32.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 6.5 hours per day) ~ Open to internal and external applicantswith priority given to permanent employees The Education Assistant (EA) assists teachers in creating a welcoming, safe, and caring classroom that supports effective learning and student success. Reporting to the Principal, the EA is assigned to assist teachers with many instructional and non-instructional tasks in the classroom and during school activities. This includes providing student supervision and assisting students with personal, physical,
and medical care.
Under the direction of the teacher, and through interdisciplinary team planning, the position supports programming for students and assists with the implementation of developmental and behavioural strategies. The Certified EA has received specialized training to assist children and youth who have a wide range of abilities and exceptionalities including significant emotional and behavioural challenges, learning difficulties and complex physical health concerns.
Education and Experience ~ Educational Assistant Certificate or comparable education would be an asset ~ Minimum required education - High School Diploma ~2 years related experience working with children or youth ~ First Aid certificate would be an asset ~ Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training would be an asset ~ Courses related to working with students with special needs would also be an asset Ability to successfully take direction and work in a multidisciplinary team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision.
Experience using de-escalation, emotional regulation, and co-regulation techniques.
Experience providing complex personal and physical care. Good knowledge of computers and applicable technology.
