Job Summary

Responsible for supporting the development and ongoing coordination of a fitness recreational classes and programs. Provides expertise in serving as a program resource to faculty, staff and students.

Accountabilities

- Support, develop, and implement fitness programs, training, and workshops including curriculum development and inclusive programming.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of a marketing and promotional strategy for fitness recreation programs and workshops.
- Plan and coordinate fitness recreational classes and programs
- Facilitate surveys on classes, equipment, the facility and programming.
- Analyze results to assess client satisfaction and identify opportunities for centre and program improvements.
- Update and deliver training and certification programs for staff and ensure all staff are properly certified.
- Communicate and administer/enforce emergency procedures and protocols related to recreation programs and the use of equipment.
- Update content and maintain program information
- Write a variety of documents including, but not limited to, training manuals, reports, correspondence, posters and flyers.
- Track data for program and facility use and write summary reports accordingly.
- Compile information and develop reports that document the performance of the programs.
- Develop estimates of time, resource for fitness recreational classes and programs.
- Exercise appropriate controls, monitor, and reconcile accounts.
- Address and resolve customer complaints. Escalate problems to appropriate parties.
- Operate and oversee the use of specialized equipment.
- Assess needs of clients, including those with special needs.
- Design the layout of equipment and optimize the use of available space.
- Research and recommend equipment lines and products for future purchase.
- Troubleshoot equipment problems and identify maintenance requirements.
- Maintain and order program supplies.
- Demonstrate a variety of physical activities and the use of equipment to others.
- Apply risk management and health and safety policies and procedures in all aspects of the program.




- Gather protocols and procedures from other programs to follow industry trends related to standards of care and programming.
- Remain current with new information and relevant fitness trends.

Supervision

- Ongoing responsibility for hiring and supervising 10 or more casual employees at any one time.

Education and Experience

- 2 year post secondary diploma in a relevant field of study.
- Requires 4 years of relevant experience, including one year of supervisory experience.
- Certification in a specialized field or discipline is required.

Assets Current Fitness Instructor Specialist (FIS) certification through canfitpro.

Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C/AED certification.

3-5 years of experience teaching group fitness classes in a post-secondary, community recreation, fitness club, or similar environment.

Experience teaching a variety of group fitness formats, such as indoor cycling, dance fitness, Zumba, Pilates, strength training, and mind-body programming.

Experience developing, programming, scheduling, and evaluating group fitness classes and programs.

Demonstrated experience training, mentoring, and supporting fitness instructors.

Knowledge of current fitness industry trends and best practices in group fitness programming.

Additional Information The successful candidate will play a key role in the planning, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of The Pulse's group fitness program. We are seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented individual with strong interpersonal and supervisory skills who is passionate about creating engaging and inclusive fitness experiences for the diverse McMaster University community.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in group fitness program development, instructor training, quality assurance, and participant engagement. Experience working with multiple group fitness formats is strongly preferred.
