Company: Corvita Biomedical Inc.
Location: Greater Toronto Area, Ontario, Canada – in-person
Position Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Reports To: Founder and Chief Executive Officer
Experience Level: Mid-level (3+ years of relevant experience)
Start Date: October 5th
About Corvita BiomedicalCorvita Biomedical Inc. is a mission-driven medical device startup developing the ARK Incubator, a portable, AI-enabled neonatal life-support system intended to expand access to intensive care for premature and critically ill newborns. Our work brings together medical-device engineering, embedded systems, cloud infrastructure, machine vision, and human-centred design. We are building for hospitals and care environments where safety, reliability, affordability, and clinical usefulness matter.
The OpportunityWe are seeking a founding Head of Business Strategy and Commercialization to build the business architecture that will take Corvita from a compelling medical technology to more hospitals. Reporting directly to the Founder and CEO, you will be the primary partner for company strategy, business economics, pricing, market access, grants, partnerships, commercial agreements, and growth operations.
This is a hands-on startup leadership role. You will move between analysis and execution: building models, testing market assumptions, writing decision-ready recommendations, shaping business terms, coordinating specialist advisers, and creating the operating system used by business development, sales, and growth. You will also join Corvita's most consequential hospital and partner discussions.
Key Responsibilities
Company Strategy and CEO Partnership
- Translate the CEO's vision into a focused business and commercialization plan with clear choices, assumptions, milestones, owners, and resource requirements.
- Assess markets, customer segments, competitors, channels, and strategic options; recommend where Corvita should compete, in what sequence, and why.
- Prepare concise decision memos, scenarios, dashboards, and recommendations for major company choices, and establish a practical strategy-review cadence.
Strategic Finance and Business Economics
- Build and maintain unit-economics, customer-level profitability, cost-to-serve, cash, revenue, and margin models that can evolve as real market evidence arrives.
- Evaluate business models, capital allocation, hiring, partnerships, grants, and market-entry choices through explicit financial assumptions and scenarios.
- Work with finance and accounting advisers to incorporate reliable tax, duty, currency, channel-margin, and reporting assumptions without taking on routine bookkeeping or professional tax advice.
Pricing, Health Economics and Market Access
- Develop a value-based pricing strategy that connects Corvita's clinical and operational value proposition to customer economics and credible willingness-to-pay hypotheses.
- Create hospital ROI, budget-impact, and total-cost-of-ownership models,
along with the evidence plan and value materials required to support procurement decisions.
- Design jurisdiction-specific price architecture, packaging, discount guardrails, and approval thresholds that account for service costs, taxes and duties, channel economics, and local purchasing power.
- Map reimbursement, health-technology-assessment, tender, procurement, and adoption pathways, working with clinical and regulatory colleagues to identify evidence gaps early.
Deal Structuring, Contracts and Negotiation
- Design commercial structures suited to each market and customer, including purchases, leases, subscriptions, service arrangements, pilots, licensing, distribution, and value- or outcome-linked models where appropriate.
- Own deal economics and business terms across proposals, term sheets, pricing approvals, negotiation plans, and internal decision records.
- Coordinate external counsel and qualified tax, accounting, privacy, and regulatory advisers; surface material obligations and risks before commitments are made.
- Lead or support high-stakes hospital and partner negotiations while protecting long-term value, implementation feasibility, compliance, and service capacity.
Market Entry, Partnerships and Commercial Operations
- Build evidence-based entry plans for priority jurisdictions, including direct, distributor, licensing, institutional, government, and nonprofit pathways as relevant.
- Develop strategic relationships with hospitals, health systems, procurement groups, governments, NGOs, distributors, and other partners that can accelerate responsible adoption.
- Create the commercial operating system: customer segmentation, CRM discipline, pipeline stages, forecasts, commercial KPIs, account planning, deal reviews, and feedback loops into Product and Clinical teams.
- Supervise and coach the business-development, sales, or growth team; provide value propositions, pricing tools, account strategy, proposal standards, and negotiation support while holding the function accountable for results.
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Work closely with Product, Engineering, Clinical, Regulatory, Quality, Finance, and external advisers so commercial commitments reflect product readiness, evidence, claims, and delivery capacity.
- Bring constructive challenge, clear options, and disciplined follow-through to the CEO and leadership team, including when the best decision is to delay, redesign, or decline an opportunity.
- Represent Corvita with senior external stakeholders when delegated, communicating with credibility, discretion,
and respect for the limits of available evidence.
Required Qualifications
Experience and Education
- Three or more years of progressively responsible experience across business strategy, commercialization, strategic finance, market access, corporate development, partnerships, or business operations.
- Relevant experience in medical devices, digital health, healthcare technology, life sciences, or another regulated business-to-business environment; direct hospital exposure is strongly preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in economics, commerce, business, finance, health economics, health policy, or a related field; an MBA or relevant master's degree is an asset, not a substitute for outcomes.
Commercial and Financial Expertise
- Strong financial modelling, scenario analysis, unit-economics, forecasting, pricing, and executive presentation skills.
- Practical experience with value-based pricing, hospital economics, procurement, reimbursement, market access, or health-economic evidence.
- Experience shaping or negotiating complex commercial agreements and coordinating effectively with legal, tax, accounting, or regulatory specialists.
MedTech and Hospital Understanding
- Understands long hospital buying cycles, pilots, procurement committees, tenders, implementation requirements, and the evidence expected of an emerging medical technology.
- Can translate technical and clinical information into a credible economic narrative without overstating claims or evidence.
- International market-entry, distributor, government, NGO, or cross-border transaction experience is an asset.
Leadership and Startup Working Style
- A sharp, structured thinker who can reduce ambiguity to a small number of decision-relevant questions and defend a recommendation with evidence.
- A hands-on player-coach who builds trust across disciplines, raises the quality of others' work, and follows through on details.
- High judgment, integrity, discretion, and comfort operating with confidential commercial, financial, clinical, and legal information.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to build the company's strategy and commercialization capability from the ground up and expand the function as the business grows.
- High-autonomy, cross-functional work at the intersection of medical technology, hospital economics, and global access to neonatal care.
- Market-competitive salary, equity participation, health and dental benefits, and a flexible hybrid work arrangement, commensurate with experience and company policy.
