The Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) Addictions and Mental health Program is a group of dynamic multidisciplinary teams that work together to ensure our patients have the best standard of care and experience. Our site runs seven Addictions and Mental Health Programs; Two General Psychiatry Inpatient Units, Day Hospital Program, Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES), Consultation Liaison, a Neuromodular Clinic, and the Short Stay Unit (SSU). PES is a 24hrs service operating out of the PLC Emergency Department (ED) that focuses on the assessment and treatment of patients presenting to the ED in a psychiatric or psychosocial crisis. The Occupational Therapist I - Mental Health (OT) will be responsible for providing evidenced based assessment and treatment interventions to patients experiencing acute mental illness on an adult mental health inpatient unit. Day to day work includes co-facilitation and facilitation of groups with other members of the interdisciplinary team including – walks, maintaining group and unit milieu, and facilitation of psychoeducation groups. The OT will also engage in a variety of functional and mental health-based assessments, in addition to developing, implementing, and evaluating plans of care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. Discharge planning, including organizing referrals, completing intake and assessments, and building a collaborative plan with the physician are included. Responsibilities also include planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating group programming using best practices and evidence. As a member of the multidisciplinary team, the OT will also participate in weekly care conferences. May be subject to verbally and/or physically aggressive clients and/ or family. Active physical participation with clients required. Lifts, pushes, and carries a variety of equipment up to 50lbs.

As an Occupational Therapist (OT), you will provide evidence-informed services,



with a focus on occupational performance designed to meet the needs of individuals, groups, or a community. You may act as a direct service provider, consultant, educator, or advocate and function as an integral health care team member. You will engage individuals, groups, and communities to enable meaningful and chosen occupations, including self-care, productivity and leisure. You will support clients to achieve optimum functional abilities and independence related to their cognitive, affective, spiritual, and physical strengths and limitations. As an OT, you will provide comprehensive services, including triage, screening, consultation, assessment, diagnosis, collaborative goal setting, treatment, prevention, self-management, education, case management, referral, transition support, and collaboration with relevant and chosen stakeholders and supports within the client¿s physical, institutional, cultural, and social environments. You will include clients and families as integral members of the health care team, encouraging their active participation in all aspects of care. You will collaborate with clients and families in determining, implementing, and evaluating rehabilitation. You will participate in a variety of interprofessional teams to build awareness, enrich support and engage in quality improvement by partnering with healthcare providers, patients, families, and other stakeholders to advance services for the clients. You will contribute to quality improvement and their professional community and participate in peer mentoring and supervising students. You may also provide clinical supervision to Therapy Assistants and Therapy Aides.

Required Qualifications: Completion of bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited university program. Registered with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT).

Additional Required Qualifications: Minimum 1 year experience as a Occupational Therapist in an adult acute care addictions and mental health setting within the last 3 years. Minimum 1 year experience with facilitation groups or presentations to adult learners within the last 3 years. Knowledge of verbal de-escalation techniques. Demonstrated organizational and clinical skills in addition to being self-directed and able to work collaboratively in a team environment required.

Working

Knowledge of Psychotropic medications required.

Experience in administering the Mental Status examination.

Experience in various risk assessment i.e. Suicide risk, Homicidal risk, violent risk. Knowledge of the addiction and mental health continuum of care.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in an acute adult inpatient psychiatric setting within the last 5 years. Knowledge of mental health diagnosis (DSM V) and symptomatology.

Experience in therapeutic modalities such as: Culturally appropriate care, Trauma Informed Care, CBT, Mindfulness, DBT and/or other evidence-based modalities. NVCI certification within the last 2 years. Crisis management skills including Suicide Risk assessments, intervention, and treatment de-escalation skills (i.e., Collaborative Problem Solving).
