Job Title: Commissioning Engineer We are seeking a Commissioning Engineer to support the testing, commissioning, startup, energization, and turnover of large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities. This role offers significant field exposure and the opportunity to support the deployment of advanced energy storage technologies across North America.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute commissioning plans, procedures, schedules, checklists, and testing documentation.
- Participate in project meetings to align commissioning activities with overall project objectives.
- Review engineering drawings, technical specifications, and project documentation to identify scope gaps and risks.
- Coordinate commissioning activities across multiple disciplines including electrical, controls, SCADA, and utility interconnection.
- Execute and oversee commissioning activities from pre-commissioning through substantial completion.
- Coordinate daily commissioning activities with contractors, OEMs, integrators, and stakeholders.
- Perform field inspections and verify installation quality, equipment readiness, and system functionality.
- Support and witness Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), functional testing, and performance verification.
- Troubleshoot electrical, controls, communication, and system integration issues during startup and commissioning.
- Coordinate commissioning of battery systems, inverters, transformers, switchgear, SCADA systems, and medium-voltage infrastructure.
- Interface with utilities, AHJs, contractors, owner's representatives, and operations teams.
- Prepare operator training, turnover documentation, and handoff activities to operations and maintenance teams.
- Document lessons learned and recommend improvements to commissioning processes and standards.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with vendors, suppliers, contractors, and project stakeholders.
Essential Skills
- 3+ years of experience in utility-scale energy or utilities BOP commissioning.
- Understanding of energization safety.
- Experience in on-site commissioning.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Local to site is a plus.
- Knowledge of protection/controls systems, systems engineering, SCADA, inverters/transformers/switchgear.
- Experience with HV/MV controls systems, PCS/inverter knowledge, BESS/PV commissioning.
- Experience in EPC/OEM is beneficial.
Work Environment The position requires working on-site five days a week, with occasional remote work. The standard working hours are Monday through Friday, from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM,
with frequent opportunities for additional hours on Saturdays, although not obligatory. The position involves significant field exposure and interaction with experienced commissioning professionals. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Woodstock, ON.
Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is $75.00 - $90.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
