The Opportunity

Reporting to the Associate Director, Administration of the McGill Office of Sustainability, the Sustainability Officer will develop, coordinate and expand sustainability engagement programs across McGill. The role will involve mobilizing students, staff and faculty, managing volunteer programs, developing sustainability initiatives and working closely with SHHS to strengthen sustainability across student housing, food and dining services, campus stores and related operations. Approximately 50% of engagement activities will focus on the SHHS population, making student engagement and campus community mobilization a major component of the position.

What You'll Do Sustainability Engagement Develop and deliver sustainability programs and engagement activities aimed primarily at students, while also engaging staff and faculty. Promote sustainability initiatives across the University and organize recurring mobilization activities, including sustainability presentations for new students in residences. Integrate sustainability into orientation activities and work with Residence Life Facilitators to organize sustainability-themed events throughout the academic year.

Student





Housing & Hospitality Work closely with Student Housing and Hospitality staff and students to identify opportunities to improve sustainability across operations. Provide strategic advice to SHHS leadership on sustainability issues involving:

- Student housing
- Food and dining services
- McGill campus stores
- Sustainability programming Participate regularly in SHHS leadership meetings and provide recommendations on engagement programs and sustainability initiatives. Recruit, train and coordinate volunteers supporting McGill's sustainability engagement programs.

This includes volunteers involved in:

- Sustainable Events Certification
- Sustainable Workplace Certification
- Sustainability Projects Fund
- Other sustainability engagement initiatives Build a solid volunteer network capable of supporting sustainability activities across the University.

Sustainability

Strategy & Certification Ensure engagement initiatives directly contribute to McGill's Climate & Sustainability Strategy and support the University's sustainability performance.

Align activities with objectives including:

- McGill's STARS sustainability rating
- Fairtrade status across McGill campuses
- Sustainable Events Certification
- Broader institutional sustainability objectives Ensure major McGill events, particularly those held in residences and dining halls, participate in the Sustainable Events Certification program. Partnerships & Funding Build and maintain relationships with internal departments, external organizations, students, faculty and staff. Identify and leverage internal and external funding opportunities that can strengthen sustainability initiatives within SHHS and across the University.
